do it, im planning to get one sometime very soon and im planning to spend about 700 dollars on it.
Im on an p4 laptop (only 4pin firewire but plenty of usb2...)
here's two cards ive been looking allot at firewire1814 and ua 101
Ive been too busy trying to figure out what audiocard I really want and need lately and now I feel a bit tired, I thought perhaps xltronic could wake me up a bit.
Just throw me any thoughts you have, recommendations and all, im tired of doing all the thinking myself for the moment =D!

I think firewire is still recommended for music even though usb2 is as fast or faster or whatever... don't know why, though.

Yes i got it! and to my suprise it actually works very well! =D it just needs an audiocard damn bad, it
s awfull right now.
But ive been been really busy lately with transfering old projects and so from my old computer, i got an external 200gb disk for the music making part of it, so im soon ready to rock again =D!
Ow yeah, i transefered our current projects too the laptop yesterday, on my old computer "theme for impending danger" placed the cpu meter around 80-90 percent, on the laptop it's 20-40! feels awsome.
so, how's it going with the guittar playing =D ? if you step by once i got an audiocard we can do some jamming!

honestly no, but ua 101 is the only usb2 audiocard around these days and is said to go down to 2ms latency.
I do not need all the i/o but i rather have a couple of extras then too little.
the firewire has a greater variations of i/o and that's why im considering it instead, but at the same time the edirol one smells more quality, the i/o are all balanced on it too, the firewire doesnt have balanced in's wich is "a bit" bad since ill probably be working in "live areas" and so this winter.
argh!

it's really hot! and by hot i mean warm, not sexy =D! no, honestly it is very warm (i almost worried at first) but it goes to a certain level of heat then it just stays there without doing anything negative.
I myself is happily suprised by the resault of the laptop, i was expecting it to be a bit "pore" compared to my girlfriends 3,2 ghz p4, but it actually pulls it off really well.
I have done some various small tweaking to make it flow better and work more as an regular computer though and it feels like it made alittle difference, I really cant stand all the multimedia wank that is preinstalled on "home computers" etc but once it was cleaned up it felt great.
all that is missing is audio... im starting to get bored =D

great! as long as you remember to keep it cooled down it should continue being fine.. if you put it on a flat surface like a table or desk, be sure to use those flaps that some laptops have under or at least put it so that it is slightly elevated... my brothers old comp got ruined from overheating...

Im keeping it cool, yeah. it has flaps that raises it just alittle from the flat surface. Acording to the manual the real danger is if you block the side the fans complety, there's no risk that i will block the fans under the computer unless i have it in the bed or something (wich i have had but with a flat thing under) and then there's side fans, i tend to avoid placing pretty much anything to close to them. Im having my mind set to "let it breath" and i will force myself to think that way and not get cocky taking a bath with it or anything in 2 years or so.
I feel sorry for your brothers comp, that must have sucked.

Ok excellent. I hope to be around on the weekends more often. I am trying to evade wasting my time getting wasted and more time focused on getting myself together for this.
I have a slightly interesting story about my guitar that loosely ties in to this all.

im using asio4all meanwhile, but im really getting tired of working with headphones.. never been a big fan of it, especially not daytime.
Im also moving soon, so ill have to wait awhile before setting stuff up properly at home, im starting to get eager to set up the midi.
It sucks to have a new computer and not being able to use it properly quite yet.
So what do you all say, firewire it is then !? =D i must say that 2ms on the usb2 card sounds really tempting too!

bump, im still being a bit insecure, it's leaning towards the ua 101 becouse of the 2ms latency but the wide variation of connections on the firewire1814 is also very tempting, at the same time ive heard allot of people on forums complaining about problems with m-audio's firewire cards while the ua101 is pretty much created for intel pentium with xp sp2 so it seems that it should run easily.
One thing that is really bothering me is that edirol doesnt have an manual up for dowload on the ua 101, i find the manuals to be very revealing and good to read before buying stuff, i e-mailed the support asking for one so hopefully that will help me choose

after loads of checking around I decided to go for this tiny little thing LAZY_FIREBOX
After all the checking around I decided to go for less i/o's and just get an simple high quality card.
What do you think ?

I have no idea, I use a Tascam 122 USB soundcard. For $200 its worth it. Good quality recording and playback, i just wish it was firewire instead of USB. Its kinda bulky too considering it has 1 1/4 input (left&right) and 1 mic input (left&right) and 2 outputs, 1 1/4 for headphones and 1 RCA (left&right).
Its bulky, but not heavy. Once you install the drivers its a breeze to unplug and re-plug between my desktop and laptop comp.

worthy of note, you'll be able to use Pro Tools LE errr... Pro Tools M-Powered with the 1814 if you see that as being of use.

Yeah I have noticed that, but but. It's too late now =D
I like m-audio you get loads for your money, but still.. i find the overall "quality feel" to be a bit poor, The main reason m-audio is so popular is becouse you get allot of stuff for your money, it's not really becouse the little stuff there are is great, as far as I understood it that is.
I have also heard allot of people complaining that the 1814 and the 410 have been really unstable and "messy" wich is really worrying in my situation as everything else I will be using is working super great, getting a new audiocard that mess things up wouldnt make me happy at all.
And, this is only for my smaller laptop setup, If/When I want to use pro-tools (i have not used it more then once and that's not really used..) im sure it will be at the state where I have a monster desktop setup at a new apartment or something.
I have heard allot of good things about pro-tools and I will have the chance to work with it some more the coming school year, looking forward to that.
Good note though, M-audio must be happy about it!
