DJ SETS AND CD'S

Ever since I got a new CD Burner and blank CD's I have been
making copies of as many electronica (all genres) imports as
possible. I am almost done compiling a great collection of
releases and have decided I would like to start DJing music.
I know records are very expenive to buy and its hard to find
people who spin vinyl anymore, so I thought I would buy a
decent CD player DJ system, a couple of amps and anything
else I need. Since I dont know much ( I will try to learn) I
was wondering if anyone here has any suggestions on cheap
equippment to buy; everything i need to get started and how
stuff works in the world of DJing. I hope to be able to play
stuff at parties for people who are getting into electronic
music. Thank you to anyone who can actually help.

The first thing I would do is buy a couple of DJing
magazines. Get some knowledge and get an idea about prices
and what's good n stuff.

Yes.
Where could i get these magazines?
Preferably free ones but I am willing to pay.

you may begin by mixing mp3s or even flac if you prefer its
quality ; why do you want a CD player DJ system ? it's not a
bad idea imo but turntables are really the next level of
DJing

what do you mean by the next level?

I think the next level of Djing is the fusion of live
production with the actual mix.

i mean that there's not a big difference between mp3s or CDs
whereas there's one between those two and vinyles
nevertheless i think it's not a bad idea no mix CDs but for
myself i'd rather buy turntables and mix mp3s as well for
parties

really i just want to start out easy Combo.

plus CD's are a good way to get people intrested in
electronic music. if they like it, they feel more promted to
go out and buy/dl it if i use cds and not vinyl since they
are easier to get.

Raz0r = thanks

I don't think theres any advantage to spinning vinyl
anymore. It used to be that just more dance music and rare
edits, mixes etc were all on vinyl. But now you can just rip
em to your hd and mix that way. Plus you can set loop points
in digital mixing, which is not possible in vinyl (unless
you're a good juggler). Even if you were the king of
juggling, you could still loop like 20 things at once
without limitations in a digital environment.

The one genre where vinyl is still very important is hip hop
because the raw physicality of the techniques cannot be
replicated so easily in a digital environment.

you guys seem to ignore that A LOT of music is absolutely
IMPOSSIBLE to find on CD !! for example in house or techno
music you can put your finger really deep in your ass before
being able to find good EPs on CD !!! in those genres
everything is on vinyle only man !

So is using a drum machine. It simply cannot match the soul
of a live drummer.
So is using a synth. It simply cannot match the soul of
using a guitar.

Chuck your desktop rig in the trunk and head out. Easier to
set up than a drum kit. So just tell yourself "Phew, at
least Im not a drummer!"

ok nowadays you usually can find everything on mp3 since
vinyles are always ripped by somebody _ but you CAN'T buy
those pieces of music on CD. fact

You might find that Traktor feels more like having two decks
in front of you. Give it a try if you're not feeling the
ableton love.

buy a turntable really soon just to dig to these styles

And some vinyl is fucking HARD to find online in mp3 format.
I still buy vinyl regularly and rip it to wav. I still got
love for my tables of course, but I like digital mixing as
well.

yes the best thing is to use both a turntable and a cd
player or an mp3/wav/flac software ; never ever say that
vinyl is out of date plz

I didnt say that did I?
I said there's no advantage to it anymore like there used to
be. Tables are still great, but we cannot neglect the
exciting alternatives that have surfaced in the last few
years.

So do I of course. Too much diddling causes the mix to be
just a groove instead of a nice musical progression.

by the way there are also albums that come only on CD so i
must be honnest and talk about ; that's why there's
sometimes a war between CDs and vinyles lovers : everybody
must have been disappointed at least once not to have been
able to buy and album he would have loved to =$

What about "reading the grooves"?

And besides all of the advantages I enjoy it much more when
I see a DJ spinning some vinyl than a DJ in front of a
monitor.

swift_jams: I think you should ask yourself...
Do I want to play in a club or do I want to mix/play around
with music at home.

Cheap and best solution imo is to buy an old turntable and
see if you really can mix some hot stuff together.
You can also buy some cheap DJ CD stuff but I wonder if
there are any cheap CD turntables.

I use a set of pioneer cdj100s, a dirt cheap mixer, I
recommend a set of kill switches because electronica doesn't
really mix "out of the box" like other generic styles.

Most importantly LEARN YOUR MUSIC, if you wanna impress and
be respected your mixing and programming needs to be as
tight and smooth as a babies arse, this will take time and
practise but it's worth it.

Also only play what you believe in, don't be afraid to take
risks but don't be too wacky either (get's annoying), and
don't expect everybody to fall in love with what you play,
especially at parties, you'll always have people coming up
and asking if you've "got any Kylie/Oasis/Beatles/insert
your own overhyped, overated, mega populist artiste here",
be nice but firm with these people, good luck

if you wanna check any of my mixes I'll post the link as
soon as I know it (or you can ask Giginger cos he's hosting
them for me)

you don't need to read the grooves if you've got a digital
time display and a good memory

yeah i just moved to vegas where everybody i meet is a
fucking dj from california where everybody i know is in a
band. i can't play an instrument but i still love music and
from what i can tell about dj's is that you just need to
know your music and fuck if i could get my cd collection on
vynil i'd be the shit,of course as mentioned before $$$.
then people told me about cd mixers turntable type things i
felt that i would be laughed at if i set up cd decks instead
of felt truntables but shit you guys are fucking great with
all this info THANKS!

you don't see many people spinning vinyl anymore? I hardly
ever see anyone using cd-decks, and most clubs (at least
around here) only has vinyl turntables as standard.. if you
buy cd-decks, be prepared to bring your own when you're
going to play out...

as aestethics said, you can "read" the grooves on vinyl,
something you can't do with cds.. this makes mixing unknown
stuff easier (you will eventually have to do that too, and
it's not very impressive if you just go "nah, I can't!
haven't practiced! don't know the track!"), as you can tell
when the bass kicks in and how long it is until the next
break... also scratching doesn't even sound halfway like
1/39th of what it should sound like with cds...

it cant solely be based on the angle of the arm
