Hey, that's weird, I'm actually looking to get a kayak this week. I've been doing some homework, this will be my first. Probably just going to tool around in the harbor here, take it to some rivers, ponds. Any suggestions for a beginner? |

get a play-boat kayak, they're short and very stable plus once you get good your going to wanna learn tricks. A good kayak is the the Riot Dominatrix (if you can fit into it. lol) |

none of those pics work... I went kayaking once with a scouts club. It was pretty pointless as we all got outrageously wet and ended up capsizing and being literally 'down the creek without a paddle'. The water is dirty because there are tadpoles and other shit in it. Coca Cola uses water from resevoirs; I doubt Evian actually taps volcanic water. It tastes mundanely crap, not an ounce of magmar particles in there at all -_- |

I used to kayak a lot. I've done still water (lakes), surf and white water, no touring/sea (aside from in the surf). I used to be pretty slick for my age. I can still x-rescue, roll, etc. without thinking about it, but I'm definately a bit rusty. I would like to do some whitewater again at some point. I'm more into sailing at the moment, I use a Lazer (single man dingy). If I move back to Wales, I'll almost certainly stop sailing and get a windsurfing board. |

I've mainly sailed in toppers but have also had experience with Lazers, it's a bit weird getting used to the way the tiller works but it's way faster than a Topper. WWK is really the best, sea kayaking is boring really unless your a hiker at heart. You should get back into it and start learning tricks, at the moment i'm still learning how to perfect my "double pump" (which leads up to the vert) and my "stern squirts" are getting really good. |

I did the Gauley in a 8 person raft, so I guess I was really just holding on, but I tried to paddle during the times that I thought death wasn't imminent. Cant imagine doing it in a Kayak though I saw a few that were. The Gauley is an old river with rocks as large as 3 bedroom houses- lots of was-outs under them. |

I like lazers, they're not really capable of monstrous speeds, but in strong winds about as powerful a boat as I can handle on my own. I find toppers a bit small/slow now. I've never tried stunt kayaking, I've only done a few 'messing around' things like seal launches off high rocks/down steep slopes ('capsizing' on concrete hurts like hell :)) and standing on the back of mates' boats etc. Also done verts in a pool with a mate holding the bow up and spinning it, but I can't do them under my own steam. I've not had a go in a new kayak (I usually use dancers), but I imagine the new, generally shorter, length makes stunting easier? I was in a watersports store a couple of months back and I asked why they were all stunt kayaks and he said they weren't but most new ones were really short. |

:D so I see you've been accustomed to the turtle roll (a roll on dry land). Do you know how to roll properly on water? Before you get into stunt kayaking make sure you can edge, roll, and have a pretty good high support. I love to do seal launches :) they really give you a buzz. Play boats aren't that new but they all are short. It's not really the length that makes them play boats but the fact they are low volume boats which allows the kayaker to control the kayak more. They also have their ends flattened so you can slice them under the water. Their shortness allows them to be more manoeverable. As for the boats in the shop they were probably BAths canoes, short fat and stubby boats. Not all short boats are Play boats. I'd like to see pictures of your kayaking escapades, they sound quite funny and enjoyable. P.S when your "vertin" in the pool get your mates to help you find your balance, use a paddle to help you maintain the vert :) |

You bought a sea/touring kayak. Their good for paddling long distances in a quick time. I'm not really familiar with that branch of kayking, please keep me updated on your little adventures. Where abouts are you planning to "tour"? P.S loads of pics please :) |

Yeah cos the Wye is really very shallow (I reckon about a foot in places) and he rolled over (dunno what that one's called in the ol' canoe lingo) and cracked his head and died. Wasn't really a friend, more of a friend of a friend. The question we must ask is...Wye? |

I plan on cruising around Boston harbor, there are some islands and the plan is to camp out on them before the end of the summer. I'll be sure to take pics. I'll also take to some rivers up in New Hampshire/Vermont. |

Yeah I like to go for the distance and the workout. Also like to fish so it should be a good time. I have three friends who also have kayaks and like to go camping. Should be a fun summer. yeah it was expensive, but I figure, if your gonna do something, you might as well do it right. Plus I wanted one really light, it's only 44 lbs. |
