thats good, the storage sites will come in handy for your sandwiches :).
the reason i was so shocked at the price was because playboat kayak are usually between 500 and 800 pounds.

If I move back home to Wales, I won't be far from Symonds Yat, which is where I used to do most of my white water canoeing. I'd also be 10 minutes from a decent surf canoeing bay, so I'd probably get a canoe. What sort of canoe would you recommend for 50:50 surf and WW canoeing?
I'm still involved in sea scouting so I can use their boats as well, but they're all getting on a bit now. They've even got some old fibreglass surf canoes (very straight/sharp profile- hard to turn but fast as feck).
I can do 2 sorts of roll with the paddle (I forget the names, but one where you hold the paddle normally, the other where you grip one blade, as well as the shaft) and a hands free one.
Any photos of me WW canoeing would be at my scouthall, I'll have a look next time I'm there for some.

Wow you can do a hand roll, screw roll and a palata roll, V.good.
I've been to Symonds Yat, great for practicing eddy hopping.
I'd recomend a surf kayak, get a low volume one though. They usually have little fins/fixed rudders on the underside to give you stability and speed on the wave. The low volume will mean you can still do tricks.
Careful with the fribreglass ones as they shatter pretty easily. They make them out of carbon fibre now as it's lighter and stronger than fibre glass.
If it were me i'd get a play boat kayak but i'm a a sucker for tricks. Try learning some old skool paddle tricks, they're really fun to learn and quite pretentious.

If you canoe up the river from the launch point at symonds yat (rather than down to the rapids) there's a good rock you can climb up and seal launch off provided the river is reasonably deep.
I agree Symonds is a great training ground for eddy hopping. It's not much cop during flooding though as the whole thing becomes flat (but reasonably quick) as the rapids are fairly small.
When I belonged to a canoe club we used to play canoe polo occassionally. Playing without paddles is a good fitness exercise as well as a good laugh. Playing with paddles is fun once you get the hang of popping the ball onto the blade and it looks trick, but it hurts when you get a blade in the face in a scramble for the ball.
I've never WW'd in fibreglass, only plastic, but I surf canoed in fibreglass. I've never been in a carbon canoe, are they pricey?

We also used to do a game where you would see who could do the most hand rolls constantly without having to bail/x-rescue. Dive over, roll back up on the other side and repeat. Knackering and funny if you mistime your gulp for air whilst you're up :) I could only do about 5/6, but one guy there who was really into kayaking could go for ages.

lol. sounds like a hell lota fun. Carbon fibre is expensieve (formula one cars are made out of it).
Try learning how to bounce the paddle on the surface of the water and catching it. Also perfect your Shudder Rudders as they look really cool. Get a general feel of the paddle eg. rolling it, catching it, swinging it round your neck etc. After sometime you'll be able to do paddle trick sequences almost seamlessly, Very old skool :)
We used to have a pretty handy weir at Chelsea but since they turned off the turbines at Chelsea Power Station it's disapeared. Shame, there you could really practice your high brace turns.

I dunno, kayaking can be a sport. My brother won a long distance race and I won a slalom at.
One the subject of watersports, my gf is showing an interest in windsurfing. I took her sailing for the first time a couple of months ago and she picked it up really quickly. Hopefully she'll get into windsurfing and we can go halves on a board. One of our mates has a few boards and a vans so we might get to do a weekend's windsurfing at some point this summer.

I've always wanted to try windsurfing but it's a treck to the ocean and pointless on a river.
I've nearly got the vert nailed, it's really cool when your just there vert in the water for ages. Try handrolling on your week side ;)
I was around your area the other day, Bristol Open Day. If I do get in i'm just going to be kayaking all 5 years of my course :)

A full length wetsuit, cag and a beer gut should see you skiing all year round. I've not waterskied as such (I'm rubbish on normal skis too), but having done it on a windsurfing board (being towed by a powerboat) in midwinter, it's definately tolerable.

Reefing is for saps and people with no self control; the sailing equivalent of traction control. The mainsheet works both ways- if you can't hold it/it's going too fast, LET THE BLOODY THING OUT. There's no need to reef the sail and lose power during times when the wind drops for a few seconds.
I hang off the shrouds too. Really hurts in saltwater if the shrouds are frayed at all :)

exactly- except I really hate letting out the sail while close hauling (the reason we capsized lol). The power and exhilaration of going on the side is awesome. I remeber once having to sit on the outside of the hull in a topper cause I was close hauling to the extreme (I sailed quite a bit sitting on the side). Totally wicked.

no, actually what caused us to capsize was a slacking in the wind resulting in our height above the water and our mass being positioned on one side to accumalativly come crashing down and causing the bosun to capsize ontop of us. Saying this I did nearly manage a spectacular dry capsize- I literally high jumped from sitting down and managed to grab the outside of the hull (the bow started to begin to vert), my weight and the algae though made me slide off :(.

Ha ha, I've done that (wind drops and then you can't shift your weight back in quick enough). Spectacular if you're out on a trapeze. Gotta keep one eye on the ripples on the water to read the wind before it drops.
I'm going to be doing a lot more watersports again now I've moved back to Wales.

I never thought of reading the ripples, thanks for the tip.- I'd probably be too enthralled at the speed we're going at to take much attention ;)+ capsizing a bosun is quite a bit of a joke.

RE: The ripples, it appears as darker areas of water, moving at a faster pace over the surface than the normal (tidal/general water flow) ripples. You can also use it to gauge when wind is about to hit and get ready to lean, so it doesn't catch you off guard (as well as the vice/versa method already described)
