NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. -- Maybe the beer was talking when
Barry Colbert agreed to let his 7-year-old son drive the
family car.
whatever the reason, investigators said that the
first-grader ran a stop sign and crashed into another car.
No one was seriously hurt, but Colbert and his son were
cited.
"I'm not irresponsible,'' said Colbert, 38. "I just had a
few beers.''

it all started Friday night when the boy finished dinner,
cleaned his room and completed his homework. As a reward, he
wanted to drive the family's 1988 Mercury Tracer.

"Sure,'' dad replied. "I had a couple beers and went back to
the feeling that we can go around the block a couple times
and be safe.''

Colbert said he often lets his son drive while he rides
along, pushing the seat forward and putting inline skates on
the boy so he can reach the pedals.

"Some kids play with dolls,'' Colbert said. "My kid wants to
drive.''

Pasco County sheriff's deputies said the boy, driving with
his headlights off, ran a stop sign less than a block from
his home, which is about 30 miles north of St. Petersburg.
He crashed into another car, causing a combined $3,500 in
damage, they said.

Deputies arrived just as Colbert backed his car up. They say
two Breathalyzer tests showed his blood- alcohol level to be
0.109 and 0.128 percent. Florida law presumes impairment at
0.08 percent.

Colbert was charged with drunken driving, habitually driving
with a suspended license and letting an unlicensed person
drive. He was released from jail Sunday without bail.

The boy will be cited for driving without a license, driving
without headlights and running a stop sign, deputies said.

Colbert said he hopes his son won't get in trouble.

"He's a good kid. That's why I'm so lenient with him,'' he
said. "I don't see why they would punish a kid for something
his dad said it was OK to do.''

What about the boy's future as a NASCAR driver?

"Well, I hope so -- if I don't get him in trouble and shoot
that down,'

I want to finish learning to drive. I have my test on the
21st of March and I need to have passed by the 31st. This
means 1 attempt = LOTS of stress!

When I was about 12-14 my father always wanted me to drive
when we went to his parents.
We always chose a very deserted road, it was fun :)
