I bought my Vaio laptop under the impression that it would have a 60 gb hard drive. Upon entering My Computer, I discover that it has two hard drives that add up to about 41 gigs instead (in terms of their total capacity.)
Maybe I'm just being increadably simple, but where the fuck has the rest of the space dissappeared off to? I understand that hard drives are never exactly what is specified on the box, but really...20 gigs is bit off.
Nice laptop, though. The engraved "Vaio" thing on the outside looks very pretty.

maybe there is physical errors and someone has partioned around it?

well i doubt this is the case actually...but.. sometimes drives get physical damaged for whatever reason, and the actuall surface of the platter in the drive isnt good and reliable to read /write from. certain software can detect this and mark it as 'bad' and not to be used. 20 gb is a huge percentage of the drive though to be bad. but anyways then the drive knows to avoid this part, and you can partion the drive except for those parts.

ah right, thanks for the info.
I don't think it is this, however, because I bought the machine brand new and it has always had this issue. I should have done something ages ago. I'm just wondering if I'm missing something completely obvious. Anyone else got 60 gb vaios here?

oh. i was assuming it was used. well i dont know what else. sometimes laptops have a hidden special partition that has a compressed image of the factory installed OS partition.

hmm, what they say is 60gb=60 billion bytes. however the computer will display each gb as 1073741824 or 2^30, so
60,000,000,000/1,073,741,824=55.88 GB?
41 gigs total capacity (total capacity, not free space right?), that's wrong and I would contact them about that?

Its cos sony hide a recovery partition which is also x gb in size. I bought a A417M a few weeks ago, and mine was the same. Basically, delete the partitions, format the HDD, and install your operating system of choice (making sure to back up your crap, and ensuring you have all the required drivers for when your os is back in action). And voila.
Sony install so much crap on their laptops.

i hate that about name brands. you usually get the nice slim design, but installed with so much shit.

Right, thanks for the info. I'll look into formatting it and getting rid of the partitions.
The brand was VGN-A215M.
Don't worry mr. Mod_Belch, I won't post any more messages asking for help with recently bought products.

control panel / admin tools / cmoputer management
go to the disk management you will see it there
the reason you only get 149gb out of your 160 is space allocated for the file system
