KOTOR: is it just me?

is it just me, or is this game just so frustrating with
its' "roll a dice and see if you've hit an enemy" style of
fighting that it makes you want to dig out Doom 3 for some
instant death action?

i just can't figure out why people raved about this game for
so long. it's like The Sims; pointless, meandering,
repetitive, and just so convoluted it feels like those old
open-ended Warhammer role-play card games that spotty guys
with no job who live with their parents play all day,
because they think they're going to live for 200 years.

aye, i hate all those fucking games. fightings only any good
if you can whip out a chainsaw and fuck someone/thing up.

it's funny you should metion Doom 3, because they signify
two completely different approaches to computergames.

one is very heavily focused on combat and has a story that
you could write down with a lipstick on half a napkin, the
other is full of story and background.

in other words: combat in KOTOR isn't very important - to
focus on it, is missing the point.

once you get far enough in the game, it doesn't feel so "let
me roll some dice in a videogame" because your characters
are good enough that they hit almost every time, and the
action feels a little bit more realistic... theres not much
to say about the turn-based fighting other than countless
games have done it before, but in kotor they almost manage
to make turnbased fighting feel like real time, almost like
the progeny of real time and turnbased. one of my pet peeves
about the game was that there was way too much running
around, but I really think the story and open-endedness,
especially of Kotor 2 (which is loads better, and which I am
close to finishing actually) make the game worth playing.

True.

Maybe you should just not, like, play this game. It takes a
certain kind of people to enjoy RPGs. I've always loved
navigating through 4 menu windows just to take one swing at
a blob with money inside him, but not everyone does.

tbh i've only ever enjoyed one turn based rpg and thats snk
vs capcom's card fighters clash on the neo geo pocket.
immensly addictive.
