huge kick lately and just wanted to share. you know.

but none of the later death-metaly stuff.
just up through elyzium. that's where the goodies lie.

it's like spaghetti western goth rock.

...to sum it up. but no one seems to have any idea what i'm
talking about. so nevermind. i'll go now.

Ah, one of the Watchermen. I was a huge fan when I
was younger, up to when they first split after Elyzium, I
had all the singles, saw them live a good few
times... but yes, a couple of months ago I bought "The
Nephilim" on CD (my vinyl copy is somewhere far away, and
scratched in the middle of "Celebrate") and, absolutely
loving it all over again. And "Psychonaut" still stands the
test of time, what an epic!

They are hard to describe without making them sound fucking
awful, very atmospheric, mixture of Sergio Leone westerns
and HP Lovecraft mythos, gothic without being Gothic, and,
crucially, a flat out fucking dynamic rock band. YES AMBACE,
I AM A BELIEVER.

I've got one of their albums, "Elezium" I think it's called,
starts of brilliant then gets very, very dull and boring.

I've never checked anything since, Smashing Pumpkins and The
Cure are the best goths IMO

find some of their music.

their early stuff sounds like ministry ministry
sounds like them.

Elyzium might not be the best album to start with, on one
hand the slower tracks are more restrained while the "rock
out" numbers do kind of forge into more experimental
territory, it's an uneven listen. John Leckie produced it,
there is a bit of a Pink Floyd vibe that's not as awful a
thing as that sounds, but it could veer a little bit near
Prog, really.

Go for the CLASSIC first two albums "Dawnrazor" and "The
Nephilim". For XLT relelvance seek out the track "Phobia".

Avoid "Fallen" which the record company released before it
was finished and despite it being abandoned, or solo project
Nefilim which was a bit too much death metal, unless you're
into that sort of thing.

I love the atmospheric build up to the first track on
Elyzium, really made me want to like the rest of the album
but it just never happened for me.
They were very popular with people that liked cool music at
the time though (including members of Bark Psychosis and
D.I. if I remember rightly) , I just never had the chance to
hear their really good stuff,
I'm sure it's not the case with F.O.T.N. but another thing
that always put me off of goth music at the time was the
incredibly trite and cliched lyrics, I'm thinking more
Sisters of Mercy and The Mission here, like Spinal Tap with
added vampire bats.

I know what you mean with goth lyrics and imagery, the only
bands I liked were The Neph' and Sisters of Mercy, both of
which didn't really do the cliched goth thing. The Sisters
music and lyrics I think is concerned a lot of times with
the Cold War, the threat of annihilation (this is the 80s
when Armageddon was more attractive) and a kind of
apocalyptic vision of Europe. The Neph are lot more on the
occult side, mixing a kind of romanticism with the
supernatural, which sounds crappy but, well the chap knows
his stuff, being the full on wiccan shamen or somesuch.

But yes, never liked the Mission (too overblown and
pompous), Bahuas seemed to push the pretentious bit too much
and comedy goth bands like Alien Sex Fiend or Christian
Death never went near my record player.

I actually remember that there used to be some really scary
goths at one of the clubs I used to frequent at the time, I
used to hang out in the "indie" room which played
shoegazy/dance crossover stuff (think MBV "Soon") and every
now and again you'd get a pinhead from Hellraiser lookalike
spilling in from the "goth" room and doing that weird wavy
hand dance they love so much to the Orb or something, very
surreal.

Actually the goths there seemed to favour industrial stuff
like Front Line Assemby and K.M.F.D.M rather than goth rock
but they were scary looking people, probably nice as pie if
you got to know em though.

*Breaks out the flour to create that "just returned from

- Hell yeah! I'm glad you brought them
up. It was only a couple of weeks ago I picked up the album
again, i was in a record shop where obviously the owner is a
bit of an old goth, but yeshhhhh, i was well happy they're
as good, if not better, than I remember.

I'm just tracking down the Dawnrazor tracks now till I can
buy it again. .. "Dust", "Reanimator".... "The Sequel"...
bloody marvelous.

yeah, and it's funny...because i actually just bought 'the
nephilim' two days ago to finally complete the collection.
i'd been searching for it everywhere used and then i just
broke down and ordered it. deliciously tasty goodies. so
we're both kindof going through a nephilim moment...uhm. at
the moment. that makes me smile. i actually just ordered the
dvd last night. it looks really interesting. it has three
different live concerts on it and all their videos. i'll
have it in about a week. yay!

Ace, I didn't know about that DVD with the concerts on, I
just put in an order myself. I was at the Brixton Academy
concert that's on there, the Visonary Heads one. As I recall
there was a fucking great deal of dry ice so we'll see how
it comes out on screen. They were a very good live band, the
sound very faithful to the original but maybe a bit more
raucous, and tracks like "Last exit for the lost" absolutely
ace live.

Oh this is all so jolly!

it's a shame i've only gotten into them in the last six
months. because i'll never get to see them live. =*[ the dvd
is the closest i'll get. but that's okay. this guy i work
with says it's really good, so. we'll see.

oh me oh my......
my first ever gig was the nephilim at cambridge, they opened
with preacher man which has that killer riff ...i loved it
even tho i stood far too close to the speaker and was
deafened the next day . yes fallen is a rushed out cd which
i soo wanted to like but ......no
theres a 2cd version of revelations (a best of) which some b
sides etc on it and has celebrate (second seal) on it
i'd try that if you were a new to their sound

i got my dvd today. and i watched it. impressive videos for
how dated they are. i actually really like them. and, i was
skeptical, because concert dvds usually get pretty boring
about halfway through, but i was entertained right up until
the end of the set. quite the performers. i still have to
watch the brixton academy show, but...yeah. i dunno. money
well spent, at any rate. mr. belch? have you received yours
yet?

did you ever get this, mr. belch? actually, i know you'll
never see this thread, so i'll have to bother you about it
another time when you've returned to the fold. but not this
fold. another fold. one that's all folded up and tucked away
in a special place. outside of this fold.

anyway, the album is mourning sun. somewhat
disappointing as it's actually just carl mccoy and a
nameless "nephilim". he won't say who did the album with
him. bummer. and the album itself is mediocre. i wouldn't
put it on my top 10 of 2005, that's for sure. the title
track, however, is delicious.

...and i'm gonna go away now.

it's true that most goth music sucks total ass. when i was
goth-ish, i pretty much only listened to the industrial
stuff. but i painted my nails, wore vinyl pants, leather,
eye makeup and such. but probably the only real goth type
goth music i could tollerate was Christian Death and only
when Roz Williams was singing. And really, only his cover
of Panic in Detroit.

Oh and Diamanda Galas which is sort of gothy. She puts on
one killar live show.

any good ones i might not know of?

I can't think ... I'll say a really good band from the mid
to late 80s is "Lowlife", try and find albums Diminuendo or
Godhead.

Virgin Prunes- If I Die, I Die is a must hear if you like
Bauhaus. Fucked up shit similar to their eclectic 3rd and
4th albums.

And Christian Death!

Fields of the Nephilim rock, I love this kind of stuff.

much for me then but i'll give them a listen now

Goth compilation, I'd say it was probably Baby Turns Blue?
Fun dancy tune from If I Die, I Die, there's a couple of
those on there. I think the best stuff on it is the slow,
atmospheric glacial-post-punk tribal thingies. Anyway yeah,
I think you'll like it, it's super.
