rectangular metallic thing

in my copies of 'california' by mr bungle and 'viva! la
woman' by cibo matto (and maybe others i haven't noticed but
it's obvious in those two), there is a rectangular piece of
metal (apparently) bordered with plastic attached to the
inlay of the cd case... they're both by warner bros records,
but 'stero*type a' by cibo matto, same record company,
doesn't have it...

it is somewhat unsettling and i am curious, does anyone know
what it is? i can't see the purpose of it and i'd be tempted
to remove it, in case it is an emettor or a magnetic evil
device or something. °_°

does it have a spiral on it? It may be a security tag. the
spiral acts as an aerial so when it is not deactivated at
the till ,the alarms on the doors sound. you know the
things. Is it like a metallic sticker?

no, it doesn't have a spiral, it's not that thing.

I think it serves as an anti-theft device. I haven't stolen
a record with that thing attached so I don't know wether it
is just to scare the 14 year old's who want the new 50cent
or actually working (i'm guessing it does). There is no need
for it now though, so happy peeling :)

yes, it definitely is an anti-theft strip... i saw a new
kind on a dvd i just got. i peeled it off of the case and
it left another, smaller strip that was underneath it.

Yeah they deactivate it at the till. I had one once at
school that I stuck on my folder for some reason and then it
took me a year or so to work out why I could never go into
shops with my school bag without setting off alarms.

Handy hint though; if you walk into a shop setting off the
alarm, they won't look twice when you walk out and set it off
again.

in AUS.
