I should have said reccomend me some Skinny Puppy releases.
Please do not say "I reccomend Skinny Puppy".

I saw the last little bit of the video for "The Killing
Game" and a kid in my highschool music class did a project
on them 4 years ago.

that's a great song, but one of their most challenging
albums...

the process, last rights. too dark park. i can't really
listen to them anymore, but those were the records i liked
the best from them

offline r40f from qrters tea party on 2005-05-22 20:17 [#01608898]

well, the really early stuff is like dark wave/horror/synth
pop. i think that a good starting point to that period is
mind: the perpetual intercourse.

then the middle period of more rock-influenced stuff:
rabies. make sure you only buy the remastered version!

too dark park is nice and accessible. so is the process.
"last rights" is a flawless album, but it is one of their
more difficult to penetrate records.

oh, i didn't even mean to say mind: the perpetual
intercourse - i meant "cleanse, fold & manipulate". sorry.

their newest "reunion" album, "the greater wrong of the
right" would probably appeal most to electronica fans.

r40f has summed it up pretty well, I think. Your best bet
is probably just to jump right in and try an album or two.

I might also recommend also recommend Back & Forth vol. 5,
which is a live recording from 2000 of the first show they
did after breaking up in '95. Come to think of it, it was
their first show the Last Rights tour in 91-92. Anyway,
it's got a nice mix of all the different periods and sounds
really nice.

Their new one is quite IDM. (whatever that means)

My personal favorite is Last Rights. It's probably the
hardest album to penetrate. However, when I first "got" it,
it hit my like a ton of bricks.

I'd go for "Rabies". "warlock" and "Tin Omen" are )were)
great tracks. I haven't heard them in 10 years, so....... I
remember both those were my favourites.

some people find it's near Cevin key's work...and it's free
stuff

The Op-ep will be re-released on a new net-label : metanoïa

in july

begin with TOO DARK PARK [1990]. mind fucking and
psychotic.

and for some more hardcore adventure check "remission &
bites"

Last Rights is amazing... very addictive and satisfying
stuff. easily the best industrial album ever made, imo. i
think no band has ever come close to making such dense sound
and dark sonic collages that Key and Goettel created on this
album...it's easy to see their influence on electronica
scene.

Too Dark Park is excellent and a good starting point, as
Obara said.

also, i agree with Asjbfoo that 'Doomsday: Back & Forth 5'
[Live in Dresden] is a VERY good recording. kinda 'greatest
hits live'. if you're new to Skinny Puppy, this one is
strongly recommended :)

Rabies is good, but i think it has a bit too much of that
Ministry-ish sound (as far as i know, this album was
produced by Al Jourgensen from Ministry).

oh, and The Process is pure ear candy. you'll love it.

offline tallyho from Vladivostok (Russia) on 2005-05-23 03:56 [#01609206]
Points: 1300 Status: Lurker

also, there are a few Skinny Puppy side projects that are
more electronica-oriented, and some of this stuff is even
better than SP, i think.

i'd recommend:

cEvin Key - The Ghost Of Each Room. an excellent electronic
album that proves that Key has always been one of the most
talented musicians out there.

Download - Sidewinder EP; The Eyes Of Stanley Pain. if you
like intense, greatly produced stuff, get it.

V/A - Paradigm Shift: A Subconscious Compilation. this comp
pretty much gives the 'taste' of Skinny Puppy related
projects. excellent stuff and top-notch production (as
anything Puppy-related :)

i haven't heard Last Rights for a long time, as i remember
it's more melodic than Too Dark Park. ?

not sure about Last Rights being more melodic, but Killing
Game is definitely one of Puppy's most melodic and emotional
tracks...

that one track :)

i'm gonna listen to Last Rights today, after i finish
listening to Benzo. I don't like Skinny Puppy yet, Cevin Key
solo work and Download except 2 tracks - chrysantemum, which
bothers me anyway by its 2 note bass "riff" repeated for
several minutes, and the first one on the same album.

Charlie's Family is similiar to Confield in its abstract
nature.

I'd go for Rabies first, it's got Worlock is a bit of an
all-purpose, rock solid SP tune. And, like, some other good
tunes. Last Rights is probably my favorite though. Some of
it sucks the air right out of my lungs.

Yeah fuck it, go for Last Rights first.

Also you might want to check out Tear Garden, cEvin Key +
Edward Kaspel of the Legendary Pink Dots. Stupendous!

my favorite Skinny Puppy, and one of my top 5 all time
albums is Last Rights.

considering when it was made it is a marvel of technical
mastery and it rocks pretty hard too.

Too Dark Park is my second favorite. much more straight
forward than Last Rights but just as horrifying.

'Bee Hatch' is one of my favorites.

if by 'melodic' you mean 'terrifying' then i agree totally.
but i'm sure that's not what you meant by 'melodic'

Nobody has done terror-industrial like Skinny Puppy.

i was referring to Killing Game only, which IS a melodic
track.. and by 'melodic', i mean 'melodic' :)

but yeah, you're totally right - the whole album is the most
intense and terrifying stuff they've done

i like the earliest albums most of all... its early 80s
electro/synth pop from zelda's dark world, or something...
its good for people who like that early 80s synth/drum
machine sound.. the newest album i didn't like at all

Smothered Hope blows my mind. I didn't really like the new

endearing flaws.

from what i've heard, sk pupy is much more linear/less
interesting than other bill leeb rhys projects. But they
have some very awesome albums such as noise unit "drill".
That album is atmospheric and dark/"industrial" as hell, but
it leans more toward "linear idm" than linear-boring.

Leeb was only really involved with Skinny Puppy early on
(and i don't think Rhys ever was involved)... i dunno about
the linear thing though... i wouldn't rate Leeb higher than
any of the SP boys really... all of them have made shit, all
of them have made decent stuff...

The best side project they did was Doubting Thomas, there is
one album and I reccomend you pick it up. I have all of
Skinny Puppys stuff and I have to be in the mood for it now

I've got a n-th generation dubbed copy of Brap 1. The
differences with Brap 2 are slight. Some delay at the end
of a track and mix levels a tad different on some track.
That said, it's probably not worth looking for since you can
easily purchase (or pirate, if you're so inclined) a copy of
Brap 2 and have (almost) the same thing.
