if 90% of the LA audience hadn't gotten their heads
completely up their asses i would've at least tried to enjoy
the show. the music from a scale of 1 to 10 imo was a 7. the
people/energy was a fuckin negative 12. everybody just stood
there, and that pissed me off cuz i dont want to dance like
a moron by myself. all or nothing.
i blame partially the design of the venue itself, though. it
had an encaved dance area in the middle so already it had a
mentality of 'separation' as if the spotlight is only on the
people dancing or some shit. but then it wasnt the most
involving music either. thought it was quite boring
actually. people kept telling them to 'crank the shit up'
but none of the 'head pummeling machine gun music' was
delivered, not least imo

did they ever come back on stage? they played like 40 mins
and then they were gone. their name was the only one on the
marquee, they could of at least played over an hour. aside
from that the music was great, but was in bad taste since it
was undanceable 80% of the time. it was a pretty funny
experience now that it's over. it seemed like so many people
showed up expecting this huge spectacle and when autechre
came out no one even knew (or wanted to believe) it was
them. then when they left, everyone stood there waiting for
some kind of big surprise...like 'just kidding here's our
real set!'

avail) to get the people moving (albiet forcefully) but it
didnt go anywher.e

people just stood there staring at them, sigh.

Ok Here's my review:

Everyone got an hour & half time block INCLUDING autechre,
who played right at 12 and got done at 1:24. I know this
because I was above the board and saw their reference clock
there.

The venue was ok, the security were SEVERE dicks. My friend
and I got busted smoking weed, but we didn't get the shoe so
that was cool. Security was walking around with their
flashlights on the whole time which was not only distracting
and annoying, but in my opininion severely disrespectful.
They also did a round and forceably made anyone in who was
sitting down on the ground in their own "personal zone"
stand up, which I thought was lame. Hardly any photos were
taken as any electronics were banned, so any hopes of a
recording are probably nill...

The music:

Rob Hall - Kinda fun. I enjoyed his first set the best.
Oldies but goodies, not quite techno, not quite IDM... just
solid grooves.

SND - ok here's the thing with these guys: 1.) Their set
was really short. 2.) Their set was still good though. 3.)
Their sound palette was somewhat limited 4.) Having heard
some of the live AE sets from this tour, I found the basic &
rudimentary similarities between SND's performance and AE's
past sets somewhat distracting and perhaps even a poor
choice. That could be purely opinion, but it seemed like
SND's overall set sounded like 1 half of an autechre
composition... somewhat under-realized, somewhat like an
underpainting.

more to follow...

2nd Rob Hall set - bullocks in my opinion. Kinda sucked
actually. Much more dancey which was entertaining I
suppose, but still kinda sucked as he was severely fucking
with the levels at the end of the 2nd set, perhaps out of
sheer boredom.

Autechre -

what can I say? If you read any reviews from the other sets
of the tour, it basically applies here too. Now that I am
in a position to adequately comment, I do think that this
shit kicked my face in, though I do have some valid
criticisms of the whole thing... For one, the bass was much
louder during SND's set. Thankfully (I guess) I did go home
with no ringing in my ears. I thought it was an extremely
dark set, though I have to say it was somewhat boring at
times. This could be due in fact to my interruption by the
security on several occasions throughout their set. re:
getting busted for smoking and them making people around me
stand up. I would say I missed about 15 minutes of pure
concentration on the music because of these assholes.
Ultimately, the entire set stayed at like 170-190 bpm, which
I thought was invigorating, though I wish might have been
changed up a bit. In a perfect world they would have played
for 2 hours and did half of the set like this big long track
they were performing, and the other half more changed, more
"track" oriented. One thing I would also like to add..
right when the clock hit 1am, their set did somewhat change.
They went into PRo Radii (which I admit is my least
favorite song on the album), which interestingly enough, was
one of the highlights of the entire set. I would stlll kill
for a board recording of this tour just becuase of that.
Overall rating for AE 8/10.

One more thing as an aside...

So I am standing in line at the bar and who comes walking
by? Adam Jones the guitarist of Tool. Here's a near exact
transcript of our conversation:

-"Adam Jones, how the fuck are you?"
(somewhat bewildered) Great thanks!

-"Hey, I just wanted to thank you guys for your hardwork and
shit, your a great inspiration. I'm stoked to see you
here."
Cool thanks, yeah me too

-"Well yeah, I hope to hell you are planing on paying
attention to this shit, because I guarantee this is going to
inform your next record. These guys are fucking mental."
Heh, I know. What time are they coming on?

-"12, they should be on for like an hour and a half."
Cool, thanks man. See you around.
"Later!"

So yeah, that was kinda rad. I also saw BoomBip outside.
Got into a staring match with him while waiting around
outside of the venue. For the life of me I couldnt place
who the fuck that was. I think I sketched him out a bit,
b/c he was staring at my crew like we had our heads on
backwards or some shit.

My buddy dropped it on the ground right at the last second.
After they left, we picked it up and just held onto it.
Shit, maybe I should go finish that shit now...

in dfw we call that getting blown out

in dfw, you will be blown out unless you are handing it to a
musician onstage

that sounds about right
security was SHIT fuked at detroit
no cameras, nothing (even if flash was off)

my buddy got a few pics off and some decent video i guess,
i flashed my green laser like a couple times (each lless
than a secnod or so) and this guy came up to me telling me
he'll take it the next time he sees it

chicago was the same way
cameras allowed, but no flash
all fuking dicks, especially when we tried getting a mosh
going.

sigh, what the fuck?!

yes, it was great (SND played some 20Hz and sub bass) which
was mega hardcore.

i dunno man, : /

Wow. Sucks to be you guys. The security was completely lax
at the Mezzanine in San Francisco. People burning all over
the place and no one got in trouble as far as I could see.
In fact, once inside I didnt see a security guard the whole
night.

SF set was awsome, played for about 2 hours in darkness. Rob
had a small amount of lighting in his area so I could make
him out, but Sean was covered in shadows. Overall the set
was a 10/10, the performance itself was 7/10.

Hi,
Does anyone have a recording of any of their shows during
this tour? I wen't to the El Rey show, but I had a really
long day and kept falling out off too the side. I suppose
I'm still one of the lp5 holdouts and am not all that into
either of their last two albums but I have a hazy
reccolection of some melodic moments admist the torpid
monotony of a lone drum machines.

I do have to say, from what I remember it was more enjoyable
than the El Rey show for Confield (though i like that album
much more)

[a mishmash of posts from watmm by me]

Rob Hall worked it out really well. he was the only one
letting people get down, and i danced then. it was great
during his first set when there was no one on the floor and
i had space to just really feel it. i was the guy out on the
floor near the front early on just dancing alone. plus he
played some things i knew like Black Dog and Brad Strider.
unless they're doing a dj set Ae hardly ever do this. i like
when people play old faves.

then there was SND who had a good rhythm going toward the
end there. bout the first half or Autechre i liked, but then
after (could have been me) i was just tired and everything
seemed to just turn into thunderous bass booms. i
particularly remember having a sit during Autechre's set
last night, going "this should be a seated event". i'd
rather just watch them because what they were playing wasn't
really all that dance friendly. i really think it would have
been better as a seated concert style show.

and i'm really just so tired of the El Rey. i never had any
love for the venue in the first place. everything is so
fucking loud and i hate having to wear earplugs at shows.
not to mention the vibe kill patrol (who the fuck makes you
stand up from your spot on the floor when there are no
chairs left to sit in anyway) and rude bar tenders begging
for tips after you get your $7 beer.

thanks, i realize that.
maybe i meant i dont know who he is refering to when he
refers to "you".
you reported it almost as though he mistook you for someone
else.
or maybe i just dont realize what kind of relationship you
would have to him.
why would he say "Hey, I just wanted to thank you guys
for your hardwork and shit, your a great inspiration. I'm
stoked to see you here."

to you?

okay you know what.
i was reading your report of the conversation with the
identities reversed.
i thought he aproached you.
so i retract my last post, because the fact that you
approached him as if he should know who you are and take
your advice rather then him approaching you as if you are
someone he knew well makes the situation a little different.

Basically, I thought it was funny that I told him to make
the next Tool record sound like Autechre...

Though I've been hearing Danny Carey has been eating up
Vsnares lately. Seriously, if there is one band out there
that would be sensitive to what is going on at the other
side of music, it would be those guys. I'm looking forward
to hearing what they have next
