I love pads. Trouble is, they are hard to create from
scratch and I usually take 3 or 4 preset pads, add fx
(filters, phasers, verb, eq, etc) then mash them all
together to make one decent pad.

Anyone have tips for making a lush pad from something else
other than already-made-pads?

pads are pretty easy, actually. Just set the attack high,
and the decay high.

How sophisticated a pad are you talking about?

something that fills up a good amount of freq. levels.
Something lush and epic i suppose.

Anyone can set attack and decay on a sound, but then you
just have a preset sound with slow attack.

Now how from scratch are you talking about. And what program
are you talking about?

type of program doesn't really matter.

From scratch, i mean - taking an unrelated sound or sample
and twisting it into a whole new sound.

IE: turning a snare into a bass, or making a cymbal sound
like a woodblock.

Well, my advice is for pads you want to use sounds that are
more sine in nature. And don't forget some sample and hold
amplitude noisewaves quietly overtop.

Although I don't see how just programing a synth for a pad
doesn't work. If the patch yours, its yours.

Pads are really simple. Just use a comb filter (not the one
in reason! that doesn't sound like a comb filter at all, and
there are only two instances of it). The grm tools one, and
the audiomulch one are very nice. Remember not to set your
resonance too high on your other filters too. otherwise it
becomes too squirelly sounding. Low pass filters are always
best for pads.

I just have high attack, high decay, on 3 sawtooths, all
detuned, with LFOs going on all of them to keep things nice
and alive. I add plenty of reverbs, delays, and chorus
effects for good measure, and EQing of course. Viola. A nice
shitty pad.

do it your own way :)

We should post our pads here and then discuss how we made
them. However makes teh best pad gets a handjob from
elusive. :D

I don't get all this step-by-step business for making music.
Surely it makes something enjoyable into a fucking shopping
list.

I made a pad out of the sound of my mic dropping once. It
was the best pad ever-all I did was drench the drop soun in
reverb and add layers of chorus and flange with feedback.

Oh, how exciting events like that are! yes.

Step by step: No.

Those were guidelines.

But yeah, I don't like walking people through techniques. I
like informing people of tools, and give them advice on how
to run them properly. You get into describing techniques,
and you could spend way too much time describing something
simple, and in the end, they usually don't listen anyway.

Pads are simple!

They are easy to make, easy to use, and their soft nature
usually make it easy on the ears.

Pads + Beats = Song (an easy song)

Pads are a quick fix, not a tool of melody. Good for
atmosphere, and thats all they should be used for!!!

actually, pads can be used for whatever the creator wants to
use them for

did you hear my last track, the one for tridenti, it used a
thing you recommended, as a drone really, a bass drone
(instead of a pad)

Musical Fascist! There is more to creation that freedom!
True creativity comes from crafting magnificent things with
restrictions!

4/4 3/4 5/4

They are all restrictions, but musicians use them anyway.
Otherwise the music sounds... sloppy. Restrictions are what
turn sound into music, really.
