Salut, Nintendo Revolution?

To quote The Strokes, ''Is this it''? It's not the size of
the ship, it's the motion of the ocean? Is that what
Nintendo's hoping?

Question mark?

I hope. It's not 100% confirmed yet, hence all the
questions. It's going to be an action packed Tuesday.

Ditto. I severly doubt the revolution will be anywhere near
as "revolutionary" as people are making out (VR headsets, 3d
holographs, etc.) If you ask me, it'll be more likely to be
a 'novelty input' like DS' touch screen, or similar.

Nintendo learnt that VR was a dead end back in the virtual
boy days. They won't make the same mistake twice...

If I had to choose between compactness and functionality in
a console, I would choose increased functionality. I mean,
for something that's going to go on my shelf and sit there,
for the most part, without moving for 3 years or so I don't
understand why nintendo is trying to make their shit so
small.

Yes, I think they knew full well the storm of hype they'd
whip up by dropping hints that it'd be something truly
original. Must of worked; Even people like IGN are (half
seriously) speculating it'll be 3d holograph projection.

Don't get me wrong, I'd happily eat my words if they brought
one out and it absolutely trounced the PS3/360 with
something really revolutionary (no pun intended), I just
don't think it'll happen.

Spoke to a game store today and they reckoned Spring 2006 as
the release date for the "3 DVD Case sized" box.

i only hope it will not be too expensive. i don't think will
technically beat the ps3, and definitely not the 360, but
they do have good imagination over at nintendo.

luckily, one of the benefits of nintendo is high quality
games, so even if the new console wouldn't beat the new
stations and boxes it will still probably be worth the money

I really want to see the controller, or the mind control
chip that you plug into your brain or whatever it is the
''Revolution'' is going to be (I'm thinking what Ceri's
thinking).

Another angle of this BEAUTY-

Whatever happened to VR? I remember back in the early 90s,
everyone was getting really excited about it..... VR in
arcades (I remember they used to say that you shouldn't
drive a car for at least 30 minutes afterwards)...... the
Lawnmower Man..... Virtual Boy..... then - nothing?!

What went wrong? I don't play computer games but, to me, VR
still seems a really good idea - a truly immersive
environment as opposed to a flat 2D screen several feet
away.

What happened?

At the time computer power wasn't up to very good graphics
and controller gloves etc. felt unnatural (I had a go on a
couple). With modern graphics they could be better, but it
still wouldn't remove the slightly unreal, disconnected
feeling that comes from things like seeing your feet in the
game not tying in ith what your feet are doing IRL. Really,
you'd need motion capture style markers on all parts of your
body (more likely now that it'd be wi-fi enabled bands you'd
wear on your limbs). It is also bad for your eyes to use
headsets for prolonged periods, meaning anything other than
arcade style games is a bit of a no no. Wouldn't be very
good to have a great immersive VR RPG, only to have to stop
playing for half an hour, every 20 minutes.

Remember how everyone thought the n64/gamecube/DS would look
before it came out?

I think it'll look slightly more interesting than a grey
square box. Althought, I'm pretty sure it'll be grey because
the DS's are grey, and they are supposed to be compatible
with the Revolution.

yeah basically people were throwing up afterwards and there
was no way to rectify this.

Didn't the guy who designed the Virtual Boy kill himself or
is that just a geeks urban myth.

I am glad that they have chosen to use a "normal" sized
disk. I was working on a multiplatform game for PS2, Xbox
and Gamecube and to fit all the data on those stupid little
disks was a headache and if you have more than one system
and you play a multi platform game you will see that the
gamecube version will be missing small elements of the other
version. Nintendo really shot themselves in the foot by
choosing to use cartrages for the N64 rather than CDs. I
think if they had gone with CDs they would have been as
popular as Play Station.

props to nintendo for doing their very best to be just like
sony and microsoft by releasing a console that looks like a
designer dvd/cd player instead of a game machine.

consoles died after the n64. too bad.

my guess is that this one will only have wireless
controllers with proprietary nintendo batteries. a cord
would tilt that thing over.

Cheers :) I'd been wondering what had happened to VR.

Despite not being a games-player, I still hope that one day
they'll sort it out as it seems the best idea to me.

I remember about 10 years ago watching some games show on TV
(really can't remember which one it was) and they were
showing some fantasy RPG style game in VR - going round
fighting dragons, elves and stuff using a sword. It looked
amazing at the time.

I think it still retains that old-school Nintendo feel (I
still remember how I felt when I cast my eye over the
beutiful (S)NES for the first time, and subsequently
purchased both) whilst, at the same time, it looks pretty
post-modern. So kudos indeed. Love to see more of it..
