Ok, so my 21st birthday is in late August. Generally, my
friends have been throwing parties for my friends who drink
on their 21st.

Booze. Music. The Whole Shabazz.

What I want to do for mine is make a mix cd or multiple mix
cds for the the Music.

I have never even attempted to mix any music together. What
I need from you guys is recommendations:

Best Mixing Program?
Techniques?
tempo changes? nay? yay?
Any certain songs that you know of that flow well together?
Any certain genres that flow well together?

I have months to do this and I'd like to make it really
awesome (this is, if i stick to it and do it) Also, it's
mainly going to be electronic, but I'd like to throw some
curveballs in there. Perhaps some ambient with a simple
homemade beat on top for flow purposes. Cut up metal riffs
to match some beats. I'd like it to be really fucking
awesome, so when people leave, they want a copy.

Making several copies and giving them to whoever liked the
music at the party is also an idea I would like to do. Also,
a posted playlist would be sweet too.

i am doing one at the moment

using soundforge

technique: timestretching: i highlight a loop in a track (as
accurate as possible, zoom right into the waveform), then in
soundforge you can enter the amount of beats that are in the
selection and it will work out the bpm of the track, so do
this with two and then use the timestretch function to
stretch by bpm

tempo changes: i like them

songs/genres that go well together: not sure really, the
stuff in mine has been quite diverse so far, the most recent
one was gescom - keynell 3 and kraftwerk - numbers, i
thought that sounded ace

i've been working on it on and off for a few months and i've
been cutting up/looping loads of stuff, i'm trying to fit in
~1 track per minute. it's good that you have a long time
because it will probably take ages if you're going for a
similar kind of thing.

I used Sonic Foundry Acid to make a mix once.

its pretty simple, horse's method works fine, other people
ive heard use recycle. or maybe its reaktor, i forget
which.

as for song choices, its your birthday! play whatever the
hell you want!

I use Mixmeister, this program works in an other way than
most mixing programs..so if it doesn't work with Traktor or
any other mixsoftware try Mixmaster.

Try to avoid huge tempo changes, I only use it when there is
no other choice.

Any genres can be mixed, as long as there is no voice
overlap.

Good luck!

I'm using my decks to do mine but I mix it all down in Cool
Edit. I beat match with my decks and record it making
adjustments. In some cases I've played with the tracks and
cut sections out but it's all personal choice.

If you're not using decks at all then horsefactory has the
right idea. Try not to limit the music style as well. If you
like a track then try and chuck it in there. There's nothing
wrong with mixing completely unrelated music genres.

example

I mostly use acid, but I'm not very skilled, so don't mind
me.

i usually just make compilation cds of my fav tracks and
take them to a party = i just throw some mp3 into a cdburner
project, burn audio cd and run to buy some beer before the
meeting. if anyone wants them afterwards, they take them.

You could mix some tracks live, do some djing, why not ?

i've been making compilation for years, i love it. i used to
give compilations of my fav tracks for birthday presents. my
friends usually liked them.

you need to consider what kind of party it's gonna be - if
you want people to dance then some of those autechre tracks
are not very good choice

imo

What I like to do, and I'm not very good yet, is just whip
open Traktor whenever I think of a mix that might work and
try it out. Usually while doing that a track which could
come next pops into my head. It may be better not to force a
tracklist, cause sometimes a mix brings out otherwise
forgettable tracks. It's also fun to put rap acapellas over
some tracks, try that.
