wasted 2 hours last night trying to install ubuntu linux.

don't get me wrong, i'm not a newbie to this stuff - what
happened is, first time around, it sets up the network fine,
i partition, install, and after the install it tries to get
stuff from the network apt repository.

"oh noez" says i, "it doesn't know shit about the proxy
server" and the install program hangs. so, I reboot,
reinstall, this time telling it not to detect network
settings at this time.

AND YET the motherfucker still tries to get stuff from a
network repository.

Sorry but is this the fucking shittiest install program
ever?

1) it should have a timeout on the apt thing
2) WHY THE FUCK IS IT LOOKING FOR STUFF ON A NETWORK WHEN
THE NETWORK ISN'T CONFIGURED
3) How's about a fucking proxy information input box when
we're setting the network up?

Christ.

right. i came across the same thing, and yeah, it's
annoying, something that not many people come across.
especially that it doesn't appear to timeout (at least, the
timeout isn't sane)

don't configure your network device, is how i got around it
(i think?), then configured the proxy shit once everything
was installed. in my case it was a laptop, so i could
actually remove the network device (pcmcia card), not sure
if you're able to do that

alternatively, do the install in 'expert' mode, and just
control-c when apt tries to find shit, then tell it to move
onto the next section in the menu.

was at an ubuntu conference only two weeks ago discussing
installer shit actually heh, next release looks to be
fucking kickass

actually, i believe unplugging your network cable might
suffice. it's definitely a bug with the installer, but once
you have it installed you can tell apt all about your
proxies no worries.

I had trouble getting the fucking bootloader to fucking
install. I got Mandriva installed now and I setup the
network on that and what happens? It slows it all down to
buggery. Bollocks.
