Whats Logic like? I don't really know anything about it
apart from someone I know tells me its amazing, but he's
more interested in live instrument recording. And I don't
see it mentioned here much. What's good/bad about it?

Overview (a good 10 pages or so, click the links at
the bottom to go to the next features section)

Basically, its a MIDI and Audio production program.
Sequencing, audio editing, etc.

It comes with a massive load of pluggins, from effects, to
synthesizers, a sampler, and a drum machine (all are of
great quality)

Its the program I use, and I love it. My advice though,
would be to go to the link, to see all the things it really
has to offer.

Keep in mind, it can only run on Macs now (unless you have
an older version. But apple bought it, and so all new
versions are apple only)

I'm hoping to be having a go on Logic 6 soon, since I want
to use some new music software... shame it's so expensive,
cause I like to buy stuff if I like it but £700 just isn't
on.

In my opinion, its a great price... youre getting a
sequencer, an audio editor, and a fuck load of pro
pluggins.

the effects, synths and sampler etc is enough to make full
on pro tracks.

imo.

You can get Logic Pro/Express 7 for a reasonable
student-discount, if your eligible.

Whats the deal with Express? Is it heavily shitted up or is
it okay? 200 squids seems fair.

And yes I'm so incredibly eligable, so much you wouldn't
believe.

If I had a fast enough computer I would buy Express, it's
mostly functions like distributed dsp-processing(?) and
other hi-end stuff I can't think of right now (ie stuff that
not essential for bedroom peeps like you and me).

That's the one I was looking for. And the discounts they
have are crazy (in a good way)

Shite, thats an amazing discount. Pro and Express are both
half price for students. Express = £98. I want.

How easy is it to get into? Assuming for arguments sake the
only real experience I have is childish dicking around with
inferior programs. And is it really complete product? I mean
I won't need to get any more software synths or anything, at
least for a while?

I cant say for express... as Ive never used it, but pro does
have a bit of a learning curve. But once you get into the
mindset of how it all works, it becomes very easy and
intuitive to use (imo).

But yeah, it should keep you all set as far as soft synths
go, for awhile.

Also, you can upgrade from express to pro, so if you find
that you love it, then you can upgrade and the other
features (which kick ASS)

with express, you are getting a stipped down version of the
sampler... but I do not know the difference. also, you dont
get sculpture (a physical modeling synth), ultrabeat (a drum
machine), and space designer (an incredible reverb unit)

but if money is an issue, id say just get express, and learn
how logic runs, and see if its for you. then, at a later
point, upgrade, but there should be more then enough to get
you started, and to hold you over for awhile, i beleive.

oh yeah, and youre on a mac right?

hmmm, having a look around, it seems that the stripped down
version of the sampler in express, doesnt let you make your
own sample banks/instruments... you can only play the ones
that come with logic. thats kind of a bummer.

I sure am. Thanks a lot for your help by the way. I did
notice that there was no mention of drums anywhere on the
Express page, and the drum machine is excluded. What is
there if theres no drum machine?

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2005-05-09 12:05 [#01592789]

the sampler comes with drum kits

These are the kits for the sampler that come with pro, but I
dont know for sure if express has the same library. I THINK
it does... but im not sure...

dance
standard
808
909
hip hop
jazz
percussion
pop
rock
techno

if youre looking for very idm like bleepy sounds, youll have
to make them yourself, using processing etc...

I'm probably going to use breaks a lot so thats okay, as
long as there is some drum setup there to begin with.

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2005-05-09 12:18 [#01592822]

yeah, so youd probably just cut them up on an audio track

the kits are the same

logic express does pretty much everything cubase sl can do

the only draw back is its a bit more difficult to get free
AU plugins than VST

if you looking to make a living out of music, go with logic
pro, if not, buy express
