"How can you be in favour of the current trend towards a dumbing down of academia, as well as a (frankly rather snobbish) move away from vocational skills/apprentiships such as plumbing, plastering, etc. Do we really need/can we really afford, 40% of the population to go to university? Yes, choice of the individual should come into it, but should that override cost to the taxpayer and the need for a
certain level of intelligence before entering higher education?"
Puh-lees! You actually believe this elitist horse-shit? You have the stones to criticize my logic? Yes- education should only be for those that are smart enough for it! We need someone to empty my trash after all!
I'm as politically pragmatic as the next guy, but to suggest that underfunding education is the answer for economic improvement is not only short sighted, but just plain dumb.

Public transport isn't so much a joke here as an impossibility- bus to Cheltenham or Swindon is the only option, unless you fancy £30+ taxi to one of those and from there the usual aggro with trains/buses. I've given up entirely on the idea of public transport. Where I live, I simply could not get to Wales at weekends using it (no buses on Sundays), without it running to about £120 round trip. Compare that to my bike or car and it's about £30-40.
The healthcare ideas are designed to get more people to go private, because they can afford it, rather than to give cash to those who already use it. That said, the NHS are making half the cost of an operation for doing sweet FA, so they'd be laughing too. Those who can't afford to go private would still benefit from:
a) decreased waiting lists and b) more money in the nhs (ie the half back from the non-existant operations carried out on new private patients).
Also on the subject, I am deeply opposed to the idea that new, hugely expensive, treatments (running to over a million for single treatments), such as gene therapy, etc. should be available on the NHS. I've spoken to friends who are NHS doctors and they agree that we have discovered a lot of the most common/cheap treatments have been discovered, the more complex, rare (and consequently, most expensive to treat) cases are the main areas new breakthroughs will be made in. People will always die and without wishing to be blase about it, there comes a point where you cannot justify increasing the base level of healthcare as it would impinge so severely on cost that it would eat into other areas of life: what's the point in being healthy if there's no money for recreation? Such healthcare should be based on insurance (perhaps a nationalised format) IMO.
In spite of my general conservatism, I'm for re-nationalisation of some things (gas, power, public transport).

i'll debate more in a bit.
i agree, having worked for Transco (part of the gas network) its a fucking mess, totally unbeliveable. one example.
there is a nut on a gas meter which regulates pressure. registered gas engineers (people who fix you boilers) are qualified and cabable to tighten said nut if its loose or faulty and dropping pressure. but it would be illeagal for them to do so, because the meters are property of gas transporters, so they had to ring me up and i had to send out an emergency engineer whilst they sit and wait two hours doing nothing, all because of fucking legislation. i got about 20 calls a day (yes 20 a day!) for this problem. but then thats what happens with privatisation.

Damn, wrote a long repsonse but just lost it. So, bullet points:
Yes, how silly of me to think you should reach a certain level of academic achievement to get onto a degree course. Anyone at all should be able to sign up for a doctorate.
Cut the number of people going to university to 20% and you'd be able to: pay all their tuition fees, give them a realistic grant to live on and still save the taxpayer money.
This would be done by: Increasing requirements to get onto courses (with a few exceptions, those who do badly at school, tend to to badly at college and vice versa.) You would naturally offer slight balancing for those from deprived backgrounds (in the same manner that oxbridge colleges currently do).
Also by doing away with vocational degree courses and replacing them with apprenticeships, you would plug the skills gap in proffessions such as; plumbing, plastering and building(as opposed to making them spend 3 years and lots of cash on a degree, only to have to serve an training period equivalent to an apprenticeship anyway, upon graduation). There's no shame in these sort of professions, they are ont, as you put it, 'someone to empty my trash'. I know a lawyer and a computing consultant who have left to do these sort of jobs (more money, believe it or not!)
This in turn would cut the piss-take prices of builders and the like, as well as drive our housing prices back down to a sensible level.
The current system is the elitist one: it favours the middle classes who can afford to subsidise their kids going to college. The one I described would greatly level the playing field.

"please stick to your own countries politics in future."
This is just too prescious. I'm sure you've never even once commented on politics in America. And yes limiting higher education to the top 20% will do wonders for your economy by neatly seperating out the poor and minorities that go to the shittest schools under the most deplorable conditions. I can see why you want to drop out of the EU. Under your system, where education is the exception, the merry old England wont have the brain power to compete.
It is refreshing to see that politics in the UK are just as fucked as they are here. By the way- did you also vote for king today? Bet you'd vote for Harry- he looks simply smashing in the nazi uniform.

I feel your pain. Many of my distant aquaintances simply care about tits, getting hammered, crap music, and moronic films. If you mention politics they look at you strangely, like you're a mentally disabled one legged tramp....even though they are eligable to vote (and it's an important thing that everyone should do, imo.) People just don't care.

Well, tob be honest i was worried about that; I definately disagree with the the conservative policies (and I also find their adverts disgraceful-the ones to do with immigration) but then again, I am definately not pleased with labour. I just voted for the party whoes ideals I agreed with most closely.

I didn't see that! It's damn right they did. IMO, they were playing up to the anti-immigration feeling that's in the atmosphere at the moment, and while on the surface they appeared to be saying otherwise I believe the intention behind those adverts (or the target audience) was obvious.
