Will legalize cannabis and ecstasy. "The drug problem
can be tackled through education and legalization. We
support free ecstasy testing kits in clubs to ensure that
dangerous pills aren’t being passed around."

i do too. i'm just commenting on the fact that they've got
a terrible and unshakable reputation as the "hippie" party.
it's true that there are a ton of hippies involved who help
give them this really embarrassing image, but i do think
they've got the best progressive platform by far.

seriously though, i've been to these houseparties here in
holland (1997, 1998) and it was forbidden to take drugs
inside, but once you were in there were these places where
you could go and test if your pills were 'good', that is, if
it really were the drugs you think it were,
kinda contradictional

I have serious reservations about voting for a one policy
party. You can imagine if they got into power and they were
forming a cabinet,
"OK who wants to be minister for finance, anyone, anyone.
Names in the hat again.
Right, who wants to be minister for the environment, stop,
you can't all be minister for the environment"

The green party is on the right track, but its totally
useless and it steals votes from the democrats.

heres why the green party sucks right now:

Republicans - They are the majority right now. They rule all
and have all the power. The only ones who can stand up to
Republicans are Democrats, who are second in line for
power.

Democrats - not really great, but the lesser of two evils.
Power must be shifted gradually away from Republican party
to the Dem party so the dem party becomes the majority. Once
the Republican party becomes weak 1 of 2 things will
happen:

1. The democratic party will break up and meld into the Rep
+ Green party (thus the green becomes the new ultra-liberal
democratic equivilent and the republican becomes
ultra-conservative-neo-nazi party)

or

2. The republican party breaks down and joins the democrats,
so now its the Deomcratic Party vs. the Green Party.

However this will not happen anytime soon as the Republicans
are fighting (with teeth) to hold ultimate power and die
hard green party voters refuse to vote democrats because
they do not realize what I have typed above about
transfering all power (temporarily) to the Dems will
eventually lead them to victory.

0101 - actually, the green party is not a one-platform party
at all. that's an unfortunate myth. one of the things that
makes them interesting is that they have ideas for just
about every issue. it's not just the environment - it's
about economic reforms and things like that as well. if you
read nader's ideas, for instance, you'll see more what it's
about.

weatheredstoner - that's a really interesting bunch of
theories, but i strongly disagree. first of all, the
democrats are not an alternative to the republicans. most
democrats are as right-wing as republicans and the most
extreme dems are essentially moderates (which translates to,
don't rock the boat or change anything). you could barely
call them the lesser of two evils - it's so slight a
difference that it's a joke. they're both terrible
parties.

secondly, the republicans will never be as powerless as the
democrats are now. we are possibly witnessing the most
extreme, totalitarian right-wing gov't ever in us history.
they're not going to disappear - they'll always be there and
will have equal or greater power than the dems. third
parties are always so far behind either of the major parties
that they won't ever even begin to pose a threat as you
describe. it would probably take a civil war to see the
scenario you're describing play out. it would take the
collapse of the entire system - it won't happen. no third
party will ever come close to winning the presidency in our
lifetimes, especially not a liberal third party.

if you like the way things are going, vote the democrats.
if you want more of a lean to the extreme conservatism, vote
republicans. but if there's to be any change at all that
will better our country, you can't vote either. they just
aren't progressive at all - they don't want change. the two
major parties love the way things are going right now.

I know they aren't literally a one issue party. But really,
do you want a bunch of granola munching idealists running
you economy?

"civil war"

I'm honestly scared because I'm pretty sure I'll live to see
one happen (as will the rest of you). At the same time, I'm
excited and motivated enough to see such a huge paradigm
shift and take part in fighting for what I believe in. And
yes, I have no quarrel with killing another human if its for
the good of the world.

i absolutely have a lot of quarrels with killing another
human even if it's for "the good of the world." nonviolent
resistance is the ONLY way you will ever see progress.
violent revolutions are the fastest way to military
dictatorship.

I do belive that some states will leave the union in our
lifetime, although I can't see there being a civil war. As I
can see Canada seperating more for financial reasons than
political.

It will be a bloodbath because they will label us as
"terrorists".

Either pick up a weapon and start fighting or enjoy your
stay in a 'freedom camp'.

I think the problem with the US at the moment is that it is
fast running out of natural resourses and will depend more
and more on imports. The price of living there will increase
and the gap between rich and poor will increase, creating
civil unrest and power will fall onto self sufficent
states.

Canada on the other hand has loads of untapped resources and
will probably will side with China to supply the US.
Creating a devide with the East and West of Canada and the
shift of power will be to the West of Canada and will
probably will devide the country at that point.
