I love this little thing.

Now beats are created live, on the fly, and easily. The
onboard compressor and EQ is also surprisingly nice, and the
ability to connect via USB to transfer sounds across is
brilliant.

I recommend this piece of kit...however, only if you also
have a computer sequencer, as the on board one is somewhat
lacking.

and a MIDI drum pad

I know the ensemble I sometimes work with uses one quite
regularly.

especially live in a large room, it can sound very good.

Mpc' are great for live/one take sequences.

I don't know; I guess I just love hardware. I tend to set
the tempo on the MPC 1000, jam the beats into it, and let it
auto-quantize them. Then I just record it as audio and loop
it within the sequencer. It sound great and it's just really
easy to use (but also highly flexible)

But do you see where I am comming from regarding the ease of
use with hardware? Perhaps it's just a myth, or what one is
used to. But I generally fund banging rythms into a seperate
machine, or playing in stuff with analog/virtual analog
hardware synths a really satisfying experience.

I dont oppose hardware... but if youre going to go the MPC
route, I just think it makes more sense for another model.
the 2000 or something. much better sequencer.

so yeah, portability is an issue, but you could get the
akai drum pads (a controller with the pads of the mpc).

I just use the 1000 for fairly short loops which can then be
expanded in a main sequencer. They can be jammed in the MPC
quickly, and then cut up and fucked about with as audio
files within the project.

But I don't need a better sequencer tbh.

MPC1000

MPC4000 <-owns the 1000

Roland mv-8000 <- comparable to the mpc's, only cost less.
Also, you can hook up a dedicated monitor and mouse to it.
This is the one I want.

offline CS2x from London (United Kingdom) on 2005-05-04 02:18 [#01585730]

the MPC4000 isn't as portable and is more expensive. I agree
that it is the superior option if you aren't using the MPC
with another sequencer, however...

I like doing bits on hardware (single pieces of gear), in
bed, with headphones on (much easier to switch on an
electribe when you wake up in the middle of the night, than
boot up your PC). That said, PC is still 90%+ of what
appears in finished tracks.

Yeah.

Nothing beats the ease of manipulating samples in a computer
sequencer.

one thing that mpc have is that option of playing one
pad/sample over itself, with different velocity and pitch
i'm not sure how can you trigger something like this with
some midi controller, but maybe i'm wrong.
i was surprised to see how 1000 is actually small.
mine 2000 is so fucking heavy and unportable.

I use that feature a lot to get really nice fat layered drum
sounds.

I think Prefuse 73 uses mainly MPCs and a few other
samplers, and not a computer. I found that really surprising
at first, considering the glitchy nature of some of his
stuff.

It's great how you can get all sorts of different drum
sounds without fucking having a clue how to make a half
decent track.

i often laugh, because people often talk bollocks about
technical stuff when the most important thing is the fucking
composition. everything else comes second.

Ah, trying to show off to our friends, are we?

Sorry, but this topic developed at a point of the day when
the forum wasn't occupied exclusively by wankers like
yourself. So I actually gained some interesting knowledge
and had a conversation free of your uninteresting insipid
trash. And just because you're a failed musician yourself,
does not mean you can accuse others of being the same.

How much was the Garritan Personal Orchestra, Zeus? Is it
really useful for doing lush, realistic sounding string
parts?

And is that what Venetian Snares used for his latest
Hungarian album, or was him just sampling random bits of
Bartok and whatnot?

Ah right, ok.

At the moment I use the Roland XV5050 module for string
sounds, and it's very good actually. Weird velodicity
response, but that can be edited out quite easily.

the 5050 was a relief after the trashy Proteus 2000 that I
bought! The editing isn't terribly user friendly, but it has
a really nice, warm, overall sound.

I really want a dr-770! The prices on things like that seem
to be going up all the time. I should get one while I can.
