i want to buy a new mainboard and a new processor while im
at it
about the processor:
im thinking of just getting a amd athlon 3000 (i now have
1600)
but my friend says i need to get a athlon 64, but then
another friend said that's nonsense when i dont have windows
64, which i wont be getting in a while
and what's this amd sempron?
finally i was thinking about getting a pentium 4 3.0 this
time

i have a small budget and i just want power for music
programs, not graphics
what do you think i should get?
:)

If you want a good investment you should buy a 64bit
processor.

AMD = gaming
Intel = graphic/video processing

64bit will be running faster for about 10%

AMD = gaming

I don't think you will notice the difference if you have 2
systems with different setups...

Plus: I'm not an expert ;)

I build a new PC the other week and I've bought an AMD
Athlon64 3200+ s939 <-- if you want to upgrade your PC in
the near future without changing the mainboard get a
socket939 instead of a socket754.

indeed RAM RAM RAM

I got 2 x 512 DDR1 instead of 1 x 512 DDR2, the price is
almost the same and it's much faster than 1xDDR2.

here there saying intel xeon, which is dual? and
out of my price range

i thought my programs used more processing power than ram
but im probably wrong

i thought id wait with the 64 and wait what coming
(affordable/standard) the next years: dual or 64 or whatever

the amd64 has a built-on-die- memory controller

it will be faster.

windows64 is already out

longhorn will be mostly 64

it's going int hat direction whether you like it or not

might as wel buy it.

64 mate. Once they finally start giving you 64 programs
it'll be sweet.

At the moment Dual Core is only worth it if you want to play
Doom 3 and burn a DVD at the same time. PRograms have to be
specifically written to take advantage of a Dual
Core/Processor setup.

Dualie's aren't out ... yet.
The games have to be written (modified) to be used on dual
cores
You're prob. thinking of Hyperthreading or AMD's "quad
speed"
...
They say to take the most advantage of 64-bit proc. you need
@ least 3 GB RAM.
It can access up to 128 GB RAM, methinks...
SGI wet dreamz

XP3000 w/ 400 bus $104 on pricewatch.com
Look for best warranty
I'd get a 64 if I had the $, but you're only limited by your
budget
Personally I'd get the 3000 and stick with XP if that's what
you got
Get an Asus, Abit or DFI mobo if you can
Stay away from everything else
Don't fucking get a Sempr0n, it's not worth the lag
Get a good chip cooler too like Zalman, Vantec, or
Thermaltake
Tomshardware.com has great reviews and guides for tons of
shit
Pentium 4 = Intel's admitted mistake of a processor and
overpriced

Don't forget the Antec Power Supply
Everything else doesn't compare

that's kinda what i was thinking, only i did want to get an
sempron since that's the new cheap, former athlon, standard
