IDM moves forward confidently while Pop appears uneasy. Right hook to the cheek by IDM, Pop is stunned by the punch and staggers back erratically. Seconds later Pop regains focus and throws a left hook which misses. IDM takes advantage of the unguarded Pop and throws a mighty undercut which seems to have knocked Pop straight out. Well, 12 seconds and this fight is already...wait, what do we have here, is that Autechre?
Who'd have guessed it, in true wrestling tradition Booth and Brown have jumped in the ring. Brown stamps on the head of Pop while Booth kicks IDM in the bollocks and tears off his ear.
Unbelievable stuff.

If someone cares to define IDM and Pop then we'll all have a great time. But seeing as Pop is a catch all term for Popular Music, of which IDM is a branch, you can't really pitch the two against each other. It's like saying which is better, Tyson or his nob.

I think pop is actually harder to create in some ways, not in a creative sense (it's all derivative unoriginal shit) but purely in a technical sense. I mean...if you have loads of cool plugins, it's easier to create an "experimental" racket for clever people to touch themselves over than to form something that makes sense in popular context.

pop as in the style of vocal pop. such as madonna or whatever it is they listen to these days.
and when you think about how, as 0101 points out, pop music has "evolved" in terms of production and the electronica influences, a lot of the most saccarine commercial pop isn't far off from idm, imo...

not all pop sounds like "derivative unoriginal shit", at least not to me - and to some ears, idm might sound all like random electronic noise wank...

it's not that one is harder than the other. if you're true to what your into then itll be good. when i started out i was just experimenting trying to make pop and covers of songs i liked. but eventually you get good at your own unique style and whether thats pop anymore or not doesnt matter. it just takes work.

there's not much creation involved, it's all *produced* to a set formula.
the only creation is when that formula is altered.. and even then the change is usually not that impressive or imaginitive

Of course, I wasn't suggesting that "how hard" something is to make actually matters or affects its quality.
I have to write Bach chorales for my A-level music class, and they're a difficult bitch to write for me-it's all maths, just following rules and formulas. It takes no creativity. Yet I find it infinately harder than creating an original piece of electronic music....
I guess that's all there was to my point.

I haven't been taught anything (tutors are drunk or pissing about fondling eachother most of the time), and I have an entire set of chorales to write. I have to use weird convoluted text books.

Well, if you're writing anything there is a certain amount of maths involved because of harmony and rhythm. Bach's chorales are no different, it isn't all maths though there are still chord choices to be made, plus Bach broke his own rules many times.

Perhaps that's what makes having to follow the rules so scrictly with barely any room for original ideas even more frustrating; the fact that Bach bended them all the time!

no, how i see it, pop music can either be music designed marketed and deliberatley catering for mass culture (e.g boy bands), or pop music can be any music that has become popular and been embraced by mainstream culture. i wouldnt say idm fits into either catagory
