There are a whole bunch of demo/freeware stuff on
hitsquad. When I started out, I just tried a whole lot
of programs to see what I liked, and I think that's the best
approach.
Is she going to make soundcollage stuff with her samples, or
is it melody+beats? I can't think of any recommendations,
but you've atleast got a got place to find stuff :)

I haven't found any FL-esque solutions for Mac. There is
Reason, Cubase & Logic, but there's also this Garageband
that come with Macs these, which I haven't tried, but seem
like a good place to start for people new to musicmaking.

Try cubase or reason. But if she wants to primarily just
sequence sounds that she has recorded, cubase is a pretty
bad option. Try cubase with a copy of intakt or kontakt
(although I would think intakt more for the newbie). But its
going to take her a while to figure out cubase....

Digital Performer, Logic or Cubase as far as sequencers go.
Then you can have a look at http://www.kvraudio.com/ for all
instruments, effects etc. Plus you have the other stuff
available like Max/MSP and supercollider.

Cubase SX is a very good and easy to use sequencer. Digital
performer is good too, but i think is slightly more
complicated for a beginner. I strongly believe Logic is way
too sophisticated and cumbersome for a beginner music maker.

Grab a copy of Halion, Kontakt ( i despise this program but
it seems to work for other people ), or Battery ( for drum
type samples only ).

All of the stuff i mentioned above can be found fairly
easily on Limewire, a filesharing prog for the mac.

btw: Lots of people start on Reason, and i think the reason
why is it comes with a shit load of good sounding
instruments. In my opinion, it is much more difficult to
navigate and use than a sequencer like Cubase. The arrange
window is very tiny, and it has many resizing issues.
If you start with Cubase with lots of 3rd party plugins, you
will find that it is fairly easy to use once you get the
hang of how to load VSTs, and using the mixer.

This is no help, but they aught to release Fl for Mac.
People tear it down and everything, but it's the easiest and
most intuitive software sequencer I've seen.

If you really have the time & money and are serious
about music, go with Logic.

i completely disagree with this, Logic is not an intuitive
or more powerful program than Cubase, Nuendo, Protools, or
even FL studio for that matter.

Do not start on Logic if you are starting computer music for
the first time. You will be in way over your head.

FL should never be dissed, it is a wonderful program.
The only people who tear it down are the types that dont
have a fucking clue how to make music (but are deluded into
thinking they can).
The beat slicer in fruity loops is the best real-time beat
slicer that exsists.
I mean what other SEQUENCER can be used as a VST instrument?
how crazy is that
