the work for you

the shittiness kind of depends on whether you want to do
something you actually like, or you'll do just about
anything because you need the money.

the first is a lot harder and shittier.

the second is easier but leads to a shittier life.

it's ALL fun.

I've been looking for a bit. My work record isnt really the
best and even though i went to school for HVAC all companies
want 3-5 years experience. Dicks.

A friend of mine explained i should put that i did an album
for a web label because it explains that i was working
during a duration of time even though i was unpaid. Seems
like a good idea. I will be trying this.

Alex is dead right on his post.

watch out for the trap of Taking a Job You Hate But Pays
Well And Saying That It Isn't That Bad Because You'll Look
For a Job You Really Like In The Meantime..

chances are you'll get stuck. doesn't have to happen, but a
lot of people do get mired in their shitty job.

that all depends. i disagree that those statements are
universal.

I just quit my job. Some people in my lab are mad about it
because i'm bailing on them and transfering to another
department. They seem to think i had made a 2 year
commitment, which in a way is true. But actually it was
more of a verbal agreement. They told me they would run out
of money for me, and I told them that if they could get
money to keep me I would stay for at least 2 years.

but over the past 2 months, i have been trying to get them
to promote me to an adequate job classification and fair
wage for my experience. they kept blowing me off. so when
my old boss offered me a promotion and a 15% raise I said,
"hell yes!"

i'm being promoted from "research scientist assistant" to
"research scientist / engineer 2"

plus my new lab bench and desk will have a clear view of Mt.
Ranier. it's gonna be phat!

I'm not looking yet because i'm so fucking behind at
college that i'd fail completely if i found a new job. 4 or
5 weeks and it'll be all ties and shiny, shiny shoes again
though i suppose. Interviews suxx0r.

research scientist / engineer 2 sounds like the guy that
would get killed on an away mission on Star Trek.

i was unemployed and looking for work for all of 2003. i'm
sure i applied for more than 100 jobs (including one where i
was asked how i would feel about students attacking me,
spitting at me, and swearing at me...), and had only 2 or
three interviews (and one offer, which i declined) until i
went to a temp agency in desperation.

i'm not sure there is anything worse than applying for jobs,
and then meeting with strangers to calmly explain why they
shouldn't send you packing...

my condolences...

i've been very lucky, however, as i got my current job
without an interview and with no competition (they knew my
work as a temp and wanted to hire me without interviewing
anyone else).

in fairness tho...there's worse things in life than having
an obsene amount of time on your hands. it's once you get to
the stage of picking up dust on your hands and knees to keep
busy and sitting looking out the window for the postman
beside your dog that you realise it's time to move on=]

well i chose that title over "henchman class 1" and
"meat-shield / reptile fodder 3" but maybe you're right.
i'd better not agree to any assignments abroad!

i agree totally. having been laid off 3 times in 3 years
(this job is the first time i've ever worked someplace
longer than 2 years), i was constantly interviewing for new
jobs. I was repeatedly explaining that, no, i wasn't fired
for incompetence, and yes, my previous company was bought
out by the Irish and dissolved.

This is the first time that a job came to me, at a time when
I was actually ready to quit!

The thing I love about interviews is when they give you a
tour of the company afterwards, knowing full well that
they're not going to give you the job. It's so... nice of
them.

"..and this the department you'd be working on, with these
fine people.."
"oh. maybe I should say hello?"
"... mm.. better not."

I'm in an odd position because I have a job that I
rreally rreally love. Well, I worrk with people I rreally
love. Most of them arre looking forr otherr worrk anyway so
will be leaving and I'm currrrently on zerro hourrs which
has been paying off ok forr the time being but I quite
simply can't afforrd to stay. It makes looking even
harrderr...

I'm tempted to do the agency thing but I'm too picky. I need
to get out of that picky state of mind.

Therre is a job going in a factorry prroduction line 8.54 an
hourr... but a prroduction line?
