Sorry for the 734th post about the
new album.. thought some of you
might like to read about it if you
haven't already...

Autechre :: Untilted (Warp, CD/2LP)

((((( Read full review )))))

"...Booth and Brown's unmistakable physical sound
is pronounced in shifting geometric patterns here
once again, as they give blocks of sound appropriate
air, space and a whole lot of bold bass..."

Autechre has again reconfigured their ever synaptically
evolving and disjointed, hypnotic ba-ba-ba-beats. Untilted
feels so 3D, like a dimensional cube busting through the
dimension of average sound space.

they have to be geniuses to sound 3D with mostly mono
sounds.
in this album I like the fact that they didn't used so much
of effects and computery because so many "plugins" and other
"revolutionary synths" appeared these days, that's a real
flood and autechre shows us that all this stuff is actually
boring and should be forgiven. a bit.

You're right colani, there's
a definite "clean" feeling
throughout this album sans
computer fx and plugins..

Basically that review is a pile of wank. The double
negative just tops it all off.

It could have been written at any time with a couple of
blanks where track names could be entered in and an album
name inserted.

Why can't people just give an honest opinion on what they
hear rather than attempting to, through the use of
rediculously verbose prattle, elevate music makers to the
realm of gods.

basically, the review is filled with contrived abstractions
that mean little to me - they tell me nothing about how this
album actually sounds.

I think Lee is right - you could use this review over and
over again, just change the names, it should work fine.

TJ Norris (b.1965, Boston, MA), began making images at age
4. Norris studied with Abelardo Morell and Laura McPhee and
participated in an exchange program at Nova Scotia College
of Art & Design. Starting in the early 90’s he worked as
an independent curator. In 1990, his solo works-on-paper
exhibition, Unearthing Censors inaugurated the Boston Center
for the Arts Black Box.

After receiving a 1991 MA Arts Lottery Grant for Naked
Skeleton, an installation ( Somerville Art Museum) he was
selected as a finalist in the DCTV Film/Video Festival (NY,
NY) for his 1992 video-short auto-porto-matic. In 1993 the
Open Studios Press selected its first ever roster of 50
artists from a survey of 500 from New England and included
Norris’ work in the first issue of New American Paintings,
a curatorial guidebook.

In the Fall of 1997 Norris started work on docuMENtary – a
photographic overview of the male body. Norris was the
recipient of a 1999 GRGRF grant for development of this
project.

In 1999 Norris was selected to participate in the New
England Open Studio: Arts Online program (with a grant from
the Benton Foundation and the NEA). As a former studio
program artist at the Boston Center for the Arts Norris
participated in 1999: A Great Day In Boston – Celebrating
Boston’s Artists, bringing together over 800 artists in a
historic photograph taken at the Boston Public Library.

In 2000 Norris, acting as co-curator, presented Bear Icons:
Art + Artifacts at Mount Ida College (Newton, MA). An
earlier version of this exhibition was presented at the New
York LGBT Services Center (1999). One of Norris’ passions
has been photographing interesting people like Dr. Alvin
Pouissant for MA College of Arts’ Portraits of A Century
project shown at Boston City Hall. He has also made images
of musical acts like the Charlie Kohlhase Quintet, John
Tchicai, Roswell Rudd, The Ben Swift Band, Ernie Lijoi and
Made In The Shade for various media and CD projects.

In 2001 Norris relocated to Portland, Oregon and started
work on his newest installation series project, TRIBRYD to
be presented in the consecutive Fall season of 2003-04-05 in
USA, UK and the Netherlands. For this project Norris has
collaborated with renowned sound composers. To commemorate
this project, Beta-lactam Ring Records released the limited
edition CD, Tribyd Installation Soundtracks in September
2003.

In 2002 he opened a sound/art gallery called SOUNDVISION in
downtown Portland, Oregon and launched this site as the
primary web showcase of his ongoing work. During its 14
month run SOUNDVISION was recognized as one of the 10 Best
New Places in Portland by The Oregonian.

As for the "3D-ness" of the new album, I have to say its not
as great as this review seems to make it out. Its
one thing to say look at all they accomplished by using no
computers. Don't get me wrong, I understand that (it made
me appreciate it in another light). And actually, it might
just make their live sets mean something else.

But if it doesnt reproduce that way on disc, why do it?
What's the point of doing a new album if the point gets
across better live? If computers and plugins make
the album sound better because they are a solution to your
problem to begin with (re: focusing on space), then fucking
use computers and plugins better than anyone else uses them
and be done with it. With each album there is a degree of
posterity involved and I think Autechre are successful in
proving that they can do better than what most do, even
without using computers. Hell, give them a fourtrack, a
mic, and a box of tinker toys and I am sure it will come
across nicely still.

The point is, if its about space, capturing hardware in disc
format might not be the solution. Not that I like him
better, but Richard Devine has a greater sense of space in
those mp3 samples of his new disc on Sublight, than Ae does
on Untilted, hands down. If you're going to go for
something as an underlying principle in a body of work, its
a good idea to exploit the medium to begin with. It might
just so happen that a small handful of algorithms in some
patches or plugins, do a better job at conveying space on a
compact disc, than a bunch of boxes and wires.
Who cares, its the end product that counts. Untilted is a
(great) approximation of a wonderful idea that has been
successfully attained by other (less?) talented artists
because posterity was not their goal. I'm not saying its
Ae's, but it is an issue that follows them around, making
them aware of the fact whether they choose to be or not.
Although I think they are in it to entertain themselves, I
still think its a factor.

just my 0.98 short of
