What is the usual sample Rate/Format of a commercial recording? I ask this because I am trying to make lossless rips of my vinyl and want to know what are the best parameters to export the wav/aiff file under before running it through the flac encoder.
Also, should I export as wav or aiff?
Thanks in advance.

According to Wikipedia, its 16-bit PCM with a sampling rate of 44.1khz. Go figure wiki would have it.

i'm under the impression that wav = aiff (it's just the difference between windows and mac) in terms of quality. is this true or am i mistaken?

The information so far provided is correct. Export to wav, 16 bit PCM wave, 44.1Mhz. Use the flac encoder to encode at whatever level you want. Hurrah!

they are equivalent, but not strictly exclusive to either platforms. mac does both wav and aiff, and i guess pc does too. although wav is mainly used with pc as aiff is on macs

Some say that vinyl can have higher frequencies than 22 kHz but I doubt it. It's just messy fucking squiggles in plastic. It's not witchcraft.
In any case, if you record the vinyls at 44 kHz your sound card will pass the audio through a lowpass filter before encoding it so you don't have to worry about aliasing. And very few humans (almost none) can hear above 20 kHz anyways.
Record them at 44 kHz and 24 bit, then dither them to 16 bit in Wavelab (with the Waves L2 plugin if you've got it). That should cut the mustard.

The program I am using to record is Audacity. Under the quality settings there are 2 options that I am uncertain of.
Real time dither: None\Rectangle\Triangle\Shaped High quality dither: None\Rectangle\Triangle\Shaped
Does dithering lower the sound quality? If I am supposed to use the dither options, what "shape" should I go with?
