Computer musicians update.

So heres the deal; I want to put together a
community/collective. I have posted a few threads to this
effect, but this is the first more or less official one.

I want to build a collective for art and music. I want to
have a bunch of sects within the collective that are
dedicated to different styles, with each member of the
collective belonging to two or more of these different sects
(each sect has its own name; members are credited for each
sect that they are collaberators in, and sects are credited
for songs and output). Ideas that I want to have for
different sects are Dub, ambience, glitch, hiphop,
industrial.

I want to design a website for this collective, where each
collaberator is given a small page wherein they describe
their views on music, influences, tools, etc. As well, each
sect gets their own section on the website. As far as art is
concerned, I would like to dedicate a small portion of the
site to photography and design. Its hard to have an internet
baised artist collective because its hard to send paintings
around the world so that many people can work on it, and it
totally ruins spontanious creativity, but anybody can email
a picture that they have taken for somebody else to edit. I
would like to have links to other like minded organizations
and members of the group, and to companies that build
softwares for music production and desgin and such.

As well, I would like to set up a messageboard that allows
people to ask questions and also get ratings on different
tools (like software, hardware, etc). I planned on having
this website online today, but I am kinda new at this whole
website thing, and finaly was informed of what I needed to
do to get everything set up, so it should be ready after my
next set of days off.

So what I would like is for everybody who is interested,
please email me here, and inform me of everything
I would need. Remember to use your xltronic name in the
header.

So, for file trading, I was planning on keeping it soulseek
baised. Pretty much, if you want to be a part of this, keep
the soulseek room 'Computer Musicians' toggled for autojoin.
This is also where members of the community could download
your work for any other intercollaberation that might
happen.

As well, I want to stay away from making it an "IDM"
project. I don't like the idea of fashion music. As much as
autechre, BOC and afx are neat, the shelf life of their
clones is only about 2 months.

What I want to do after people have started working
together, is to make the website into a weblabel of sorts,
so that people can download albums and songs that have been
made by the community, and after enough of an interest (and
some capital) is built up, then publish albums and books by
the members (where the costs are returned to the financial
contributers first, and then the people who contributed work
will get some money after).

So yeah, thats about it... email me if you are interested,
and then I will respond and give you more info.

I think mimicking the whole record label thing might not be
as successful today (monetarily, since I see no other
purpose in doing it given free sites to upload music as well
as free messageboards already exist) as it was to the few
who made it in the past. The environment is different and is
always changing.

Well, I don't really see it as a mimicking thing. It the
collective is publishing its own music, it acts as a label.
Athough its not really meant to be a label anyway. Its more
of a publishing company, since I want to publish both books
and music.

I really like the idea of audio and visuals that act in
tandem, and I like the idea of doing that through a cd and
book. I don't want it to become another weblabel. There are
too many weblabels, and they all seem too unidirectional,
and one track. I want to make something different.

This is more like a 'band' than anything like that.... just
one with members around the world.

this sounds like a really good idea... i would think about
contributing, but i don't have access to soulseek or
anything. as a separate suggestion, why not have the
members use a private ftp portion of the website to share
their files?

I wonder why you keep typing "baised" when you mean
"based"..

Well, I am totally down with that... i don't have access to
an ftp server, otherwise that is the direction I would want
to go. If anybody has an ftp server that they would be
willing to contribute, that would be great...

qrter: I don't know... maybe I am trying to shake things up
a bit :P

what i meant was that some webhosting services (assuming you
are paying for one) also give you an ftp service that you
can easily customize however you like. at least mine
does...

Kay. Well its not soulseek records. Thanks for the info.

Its not really a label either... I just misused that word.
Sorry.

Let me reiterate. Not a weblabel, but collaberators work
will be posted on the webpage. That is why I described it as
similar to a 'weblabel of sorts'.

Its a collective. Different projects, with a consistent
group of people. There are already more than enough
weblabels out there.

All right... I am going to be emailing everyone with further
information later on today. Anybody else who is interested,
please email me with the foreposted link. If you are
interested, but you don't want to use soulseek, we will find
a way to work around it. Thnx ;)
