one you know + diana krall - live in paris (they probably
have this in the store if you don't.. it's like the ultimate
hifi-cd...) + robbie williams (the one with a love supreme
on it).

Burn your own CD with different tracks on. Pro Radii would
be a good track, some dirty grime sounds too and definitely
something with vocals on.

Bring something you know really well, preferably some thing
that is highly produced.
Mars Volta: De Loused, is a good one if you know it well.
Also find something that your current speakers can't handle,
the really Bassy one of SAWII is always a good one for
seeing the shop assistants face when the bass distorts.

i wouldn't want to play some of those loudly in a shop.
you'll disrupt the customers and get funny stares.

It doesn't matter if you disturb people you are going to be
spending oodles of cash on something that should last you
for ten years. Take whatever you like and know well right
now, listen to the bottom of the range of speakers thay have
as well. It is good to have a reference point.

about playing weird stuff in stores,
while this was not a home theatre store, it was a record
store,
my friend wanted to hear a sample of gantz graf so the guy
put cap.iv his table to be broadcast in the store.
everyone stopped and looked up at the speaker like 'what the
fuck is that?'

ha, excellent. the reactions would be funnier in some
department store with house wives doing their shopping.

A love supreme is extremely well-produced, and that Diana
Krall cd is one that every hifi-freak owns.. they don't
necessarily even have to like the music, it's just so
amazingly mastered plus being live... on a really good setup
you can hear very clearly when the pianist uses the pedals
and you can hear lots of small details...

I found Homogenic by Björk to be an excellent cd for
testing soundsystems.

don't put JUST idm on it... put various stuff

(and yes, one with high-pitched treble and one with heavy
bass also - gwely mernans for the bass will be just fine, or
Sabrina by Einstürzende Neubauten, or some stuff by
SunnO))))

you shouldn't do two separate tracks with bass and treble.
one with both is what is good... and vlari is right..
homogenic is also good.. and esbjørn svensson trio - seven
days of falling...

oh, and if you're going to compile your own cd, don't use
mp3s... preferrably bring the original copies of the cds
(and not too many cds). If they have vinyl players in store,
bring a 12" as well (not windowlicker, as I know you have,
as the mastering on that track sucks hard).

found only one place with a listening thing set up. grado
was clleeeaar. though they were the best ones on display,
none of the sennheisers or sonys they had up there were at
the same level. the bass was definitely lacking (they were
grado 125) but very transparent. I would go for the grado
rs-2 if they weren't $500.
