I wonder if a format pretty much gets rid of all viruses.

find the name of the virus from the scanner, then google the
removal instructions. most probably you will have to remove
some registry keys and reboot in that safe mode. then you
can update the scanner

What he said.

Hint: it's not just called Win32.

Not bootsector viruses - but those are relatively rare these
days.

BTW, Nod32 has a 30 day free trial that is pretty
much guaranteed to clean your computer. Once you see how
well it works and how few system resources it consumes the
&39.00 USD will seem cheap.

Man, I wish. That's a company that puts making a good
product ahead of anything else. Someday they'll get bought
out by Computer Associates or Microsoft or something and the
long slow slide to suckdom will begin.

Honestly, just download the Nod32 demo and you'll get it
sorted quickly. There's no obligation and no salesman will
visit.

They didn't spam me to death when I tried the demo. I don't
even think they asked for it. They haven't spammed me to
death after I registered.

They are the Good Guys, not the Bad Guys.

when re-formatting, always remember to delete the
partition(s) then re-create them. this should ged rid of any
boot sector viruses you may or may not have.

if spybot, ad-aware or your AV hasn't managed to get rid of
the problems, go through your startup list and google any
unfamiliar processes one by one. you should be able to find
information on all of them and determine if they are legit
or not. if in doubt leave them there!

the wierd thing is its not running any processes infact it
seems to be doing nothing except setting off my virus scan
and refusing to be deleted (unless of course its affecting a
legitimate process but nothing seems to be malfunctioning)

it's not running any processes..?

that sounds kind of hard to belief.

sounds like he's on 98SE, and so ctrl-alt-del only shows the
applications, and not all running processes.

well that's my guess.

running processes don't have to show up in the task manager.
otherwise you could just kill any virus this way. reboot in
safe mode and delete that dll. the moment the registry is
executed you practically need a virus scanner cause the
virus protects itself against user actions threough these
keys.
