To iPod users:

How can I format my computer without having the songs in my
iPod wiped when I reinstall the ipod software and connect
it?

Are you formatting you computer or are you restoring the
iPod?

I am formatting my computer.
I want to keep my mp3s on my iPod and then dump them back
onto my computer after it is formatted.

Check out the software at ipodlounge.com, they should have
something suitable

be sure not to update the iPod when you have nothing in your
library...

after you system is up and running again, you can hook up
the iPod and import the songs from the iPod to the library

Ah I see. You need some sort of program to "download" the
files from the computer. If you had a mac, theres this
program called iPodRip which does the job nicely, but if
it's a PC I don't know any. There's quite a few available
here.

The iPod software bit should not wipe your tracks, it hasn't
done it when I reformatted my Mac, so I guess your computer
wont either.

There are rescue programs for those folks that have synced
their Ipod to a new Itunes installation. As long as you
dont write over the Ipod you should be able to pull them off
after you format the drive of the PC

Thanks everyone!
I found a nice looking program called iPod Agent that will
do the trick.

Happy Friday Night

btw: to be sure it goes well you can always use the iPod as
a backup HD,
I mean clear it and copy all the songs you want to keep to
the iPod like it's a normal HD
