Since reading this thread I know less about the Hafler Trio
than I did before.

did you know much about the second one?

there was some sort of cryptic little blurb about it on the
phonometrography website but it appears to have dissapeared.

I like the way Elusive violently alternates between
employing words to convey nothing at all, as in "Just picked
up (insert name of something ball-sappingly
joyless
).. woah shit" but usually more vacuous,
contrasted with the long-winded, forensic dissections of
bass, bits between 4:54 and 4:59 and testing the track out
on different stereos.

I say "I like..." I mean "I get bored very quickly
reading..."

or manhandling pieces of music, pitching them down and then
being surprised at all the stuff he can suddenly hear, which
really has little to do with what the artist actually wants
you to hear and therefore has little to do with the actual
track itself (on which V/VM have built a semi-career).

i listened to this not very long ago - was surprised a lot
by it's ambientness/droneness. It was good. i like this kind
of music more than idm lately.

ambient, drone, noise, but not idm.
there is a slighte chance i have wrong mp3s, of course.

whatever. does it make difference to You, Bob Mcbob?

offline Bob Mcbob on 2005-04-14 08:05 [#01564774]

i always lumped ambient and noise in together with idm, like
idm is one big genre and the otehrs are like
sections...never heard 'drone' though...

that's some rather new term for a kind of 'musique concrete'
or close to. a kind of noise, also. where there is no or a
few of the...i lack words.

it isn't any of these descriptions, really.

it's a bit experimental, I guess, but also not really. they
do use drones now and then, but also lots of percussive
stuff, voices, bits of records.

their best work is when these different elements work within
one recording, for example on "kill the king".

they work a lot with all kinds of arty people - they even
made a record with Peter Greenaway.

I say "they", but it really is a he.
