Maybe I'm going mad, but when I read their really down to earth interviews, their "we just make tunes innit" kinda vibe, and the way they laugh at those who intellectualize their music (not bad things at all) my mind can't compute that with otherworldly, insane but great albums like Confield or EP7.
Anyone get what I mean?

You feel funny about it because, somehwere, deep down, even you realise that they're laughing at fans like you. They make music they enjoy, that they think "rocks", that's their own, and prats like you can't accept that there's no great secret, no conceled wisdom in the beats, no magic formula just waiting to be unlocked. I pity them because of the fucking deadbeats like you that tarnsih their name.

No, I don't think there's a "big secret" or anything.
But considering how complex their music sounds, I'm surprised at how they discuss it. I think you feel the same amount of surprise, if you were honest and weren't trying to be so clever.

I'm pleasantly suprised they're quite so down to earth. I don't doubt they're very intelligent but... you know, ok I am being harsh, but what do you want them to say? Should they "explain" a track, say "Yes, it's the inside of a space ship", yes it's all based on architecture, Uviol is based on Bradnap's theorum of V0.... maybe it's just music.

They've had ages to learn exactly what they are doing, of course it's nothing to them - just because idiot fanboys think up elaborate theories about what's going on you can't expect them to have a similar perspective. It's their own music, what do you expect them to say?

earhleakage, there is nothing to "get". I just feel their music. I like the futuristic, cold, otherworldly sound to it I guess. Maybe you don't. There's nothing more to it; I like my head being fucked with weird beats and strange structures.
I don't understand some of the reactions here: honestly, considering their output, don't you find their attitudes surprising? I mean, Aphex interviews relate to his music, Squarepusher interviews relates to the music, and Stockhousen interviews sound like pretentious shitty drivel (like his music in a way.) Same with Boards of Canada.
It's not like I said anything particularly fanboyish or geeky, geez.

Describing your own music is tedious and often impossible. People don't always know why they do things...also it's down to taste.. and what sounds good to ae for example.

I guess you are right.
Although, when art is so abstract, it's not unfair to be interested in some sort of explination, is it? I know this is a weird example-but if some artist drew an insane abstract picture, you'd be interested to hear what was going through his mind as he/she did it, no?
I am acually happy with their down-to earthness. I never criticized it anyway. I guess, after listening to Confield while stoned, the way it's creators describe their process seems oddly down to earth, that's all.

I don't understand what you're getting at now. There are lots of interviews with Ae where they talk about their music. There's lots of interviews where Aphex just talks bollocks to piss off an idiot journalist. Karlheinz Stockhausen is completely different and doesn't really belong in that little grouping. Are you saying Ae never talk about their music now?

Maybe I need to read more interviews, I'm talking about their recent batch of Untilted interviews here.
Aphex Twin's insanity and taking the piss fits with obvious themes in the albums, where he's just doing shit like the Milkman song to take the piss and have a laugh. Boards of Canada, for example, explain the siginifance and reasoning behind their names, sounds, references etc.
I think Autechre do their stuff on an insitincitve level, the way like a jazz artist might work, so explinations or discussions on how and why are irrelevant. It's just that, when an album sounds as involved and otherworldy as Confield, you can't help but think it was inspired by various things and had a main focuse, or something.

Like one of ae stated, what's the point in doing an elaborate track with algorythms and what have you based on a leopard's DNA if it ultimately sounds shit?
I think there simply often isn't an explanation that can be given regarding a track, wich is why music is so special.
Maybe we'd have to speak music to fully explain a track. You just seem to be interested in the science.

Yeah. And I can't explain half the stuff I do, it's just on a subconcious level, and the whole process is like improvising within a sequencer with synths and sounds and has no significance beyond setting down various atmospheres or emmotions, and perhaps conveying a specific time or place through music, or maybe just trying to explore as many areas as I can. So I'm a hypocrit, I guess, but I always though Ae thought on a different wavelength, like some other artists and how they talk about their music. You can't help but thinking that, listening to their more extreme stuff.

I think the reason people want to get inside AE's collective head is because their tracks reek of imagination and creativity which can be scary for some since they have to rely on their own judgment and acetic taste. People want reassurance that their judgment is valid and with music like this, the only way to accomplish that is to see if your assessment matches with AE's original intent. CS2x's example of the evaluation of an abstract painting is a valid one. The problem is, AE have no intent other then making something that sounds good to them for reasons they are mostly unaware and in their opinion insignificant.

*I'm* a rude prick? Funny, that. I don't insult people when their opinions don't agree with my own. And if a thread is about something I'm not particularly interested in, I leave it alone instead of dissing the thread starter because I don't care about what they're saying.
I haven't even said anything rude in this thread. I care about everyone's views, mertens just happened to find one that I agree with. I mean, "fish and darkness"...Well, yes.
