I was just wondering if anybody else here uses a midi controller, what kind and how you like it.
I just bought an m-audio O2 yesterday. Its been really good so far, and in the day that I have had it, its really helped with making less predictable compositions than I usually make with straight programming. Its nothing extravagent but it has a two octave range with eight knobs, a slider and 8 switches...

I got an Evolution MK-225c in February and it's nice. I use it mainly for mod-wheeling and pitchbends, but the best thing is that you can get the general feel of a melody quite fast using a controller.

i use my microkorg as a midi controller. it's got knobs which is useful.
i've been thinking about selling it and getting an oxygen 8 instead, since i don't really use the microkorg as a synth much.

um, i rented an madudio oxygen one and i didnt like it much.
i now have an evolution x session which i really like. the only lame part is that they market it as for 'digiral dj' shit with the crossfader, but its basically just a big slider, so its cool.

I'm actually controling my Microkorg with my O2 so I can repair any mistakes I make during composition. Its also got larger keys so I don't find myself pressing the wrong ones at the wrong time as much.
I couldn't get the knobs on my korg to work as controllers, and having 3 more, plus the eight buttons is a definate benefit. But if I were you, I wouldn't sell my korg. What are you going to use as a vocoder! (also the hardware sound is really nice for modulation and such... plus the bass is better than what you can make with most software)
Dennispearce; thats a nice piece of equipment. I used to have a 16 knob unit but it didn't really like my software (or the software didn't like it) and I took it back. Right now, I really like the idea of having keys... and a preset manager.

I´m about to sell my Oxygen 8, I replaced it with Edirol pcr-m1 last week (m1 is a lot better and smaller, it has over all a totally different feel to it)

Looks nice. A friend of mine just sold his edirol PCR-A30 for one of these.
He says pretty much the same thing about the conversion, and has the added benifit of having a built in soundcard, so he could sell his old soundcard.

I am actually designing and will be making at some point my own midi controller, based on a guitar.
It will have a long home made ribbon controller which will have at least 2 ribbons on it, which can be mounted on a table top as a long thin sitar type thingy or worn like a guitar.
All processing will be done with a PIC microcontroller. I have most of the code, just need to tweak it for however many ribbons I end up making. If anyone is interested then I could post up some more info if you want to make your own.
The idea is you can 'play' midi parameters, either by sliding your finger(s) along the 'strings' which would cover all points between X and Y, like in a knob, or press finger on point X then point Y, skipping out the rest, unlike a knob. Component count is quite low, the PIC quantises the voltage produced from finger position, and transmits a relevant midi message on the correct channel. :)

The coolest fucking thing:
I've just finished setting up/testing my Evolution with Traktor DJ Studio, and it's great. It made an effortless mixing program even easier.
I set the knobs to control filter and eq, but the most useful was assigning cue, pitch- and loopcontrols to the keys. Not so useful was the pitchbend controlling forward- & rewind, but it works to a certain degree.
