Laptop Battle - Seattle

It's on friday. I'm an alternate so i won't know till the
last minute if i get to go on or not. I'm a bit nervous
because i've never been in a laptop battle, nor have I even
been to a laptop battle. I mostly want to just play
real loud in front of people so i guess if i get to go on,
in a way, i've already won. sort-of. I get a free t-shirt
regardless and some beer tickets and free entry for a guest
so it should be a good time. there's info here
and you may have heard a little blurb about it on NPR this
week..?

anyway, anyone have tips? suggestions? should i wear a funny
hat? or a tie? should i dance a jig??! how do these things
go generally?!

I think you need to put some metal covering on your laptop
and attach a chain and some spikes. Dont forget to wear a
helmet.

at the end of your set start to cry, drop to your knees and
then pretend to faint, then when crowds of people come over
to your assistance, wait a second or two, even three and
jump right up screaming. Sure they will be a little shocked,
but they will remeber your wont they ?

AS for attire, you need to make a t-shirt, out of THE
picture, poop cannons are deffinately going to be the next
thing happening

improvisational work via software is rated. if you just
press play and stand there youre obviously not going to get
much response.

you have a limited amount of space to work with as well, so
you cant bring in tons of shit. also crowd interaction is
part of it. doesnt mean you have to wear crazy shit to get a
response, but thats up to the individual. each area has
different judging, since the crowd also judges. maybe people
will be more on the 4/4 tip or maybe ambient.

its quite a cool thing, NPR recently did a small blurb about
it.

Hardware rules!!! arrggghhh i know a whole bunch of
people are gonna disagree w me but like earlier in the post,
what are u gonna press the space bar and start jumpin round
pretending. we all know about the dj fakers that act all
hype bop there head and throw up there hands crossfade but
there not mixing theres only one record going. but to go
further i believe a computer(ONLY) for tunes is like trying
to make one item a chainsaw, lawnmower/weedwacker,
motorcycle and treetrimmer in one. im sure aphex plays live
w a computer so he doesnt have to travel w his fragile
irreplacable gear and so people dont see his secret stash im
sure he uses his computer for certain needed things only. i
believe you need 1 dedicated item for each task. Does your
computer have flam & roll for your drums? do you know what
flam is?do u have pads for your drums and keys for your
nonpercussion sounds sustain pedal etc. do u have these
accessories for your computer or can u type them or assign.
im not trying to be a dick/joking these are real questions/
an attempt to make you get better

(7000th post!)

i will be running ableton live. i have taken some of my
recent tracks and set them up in Ableton so i can perform
them live. this will involve triggering loops or groups of
loops, manipulating effects, and triggering samples, all in
real time. mostly i will be improvising the structure of
the songs and the breaks more than, say, individual notes or
beats. if you've used Ableton Live, you know what i'm
talking about.

there are videos up of the past laptop battles at
fourthcity.net. you can download them here.

anyway, thanks for the "support" bastards!

you can't even use a mouse...it's all about wankery...i mean
a laptop is the same fucking thing as a desktop computer...

why fucking bother...get something released by a record
label instead and play some fookin gigs...

you can use a mouse.

and why bother? because it sounds like fun. there are
prizes. there could be as many as 700 people there and i
get to play loud enough to ring all of their ears. i'd love
to 'get something released by a record label' and perhaps
this will be a catylist for that to happen. this could also
lead to more gigs. duh!

contender. I battle tonight at Chop Suey in Seattle, 9:00pm
under the moniker kenji beatbox. please meditate some good
juju in my general direction at that time!

it was a good battle. there were several very talented
producers competing. unfortuantely for me, in the first
round i was paired with a guy called Nordic Soul, a laptop
musician on Decible records which was also a sponser for the
event. he was damn good. my set was good too (well thats
what people were telling me) but not good enough to beat a
localy known guy. I did a live mix of my janet jackson
remix, i thought on april fools day, the audience might see
the humor in it. but it seems people were more into the
straight forward traditional style electronic than that.
*shrug* so i got eliminated in the first round and only got
to play 1 set.

but, it was fun. i'd definitely do it again. it was a
learning experience!

most of them just did some jungle type of stuff. Nordic Soul
sounded the most interesting to me. I could take him though.
;)

he was getting a lot of pre-performance hype. i think i was
eliminated before i even started :/
but i guess if i was really fucking awesome i would have
beat him and i was admitedly not really fucking awesome :(
still fun though, lots of people there and they were
cheering though not as loud as they did for Nordic Soul!

my wife shot a video of my 3 minute set. it's now up at my
zebox site if anyone is curious. unfortunately, the mic on
the camera is kinda shit so the sound is, well, shitty. if
you want a better idea what it is supposed to sound like,
the original version of the track is also up there!
