Heh, got ya looking... had to do that to get you to read this... but I bought Volume 1, Sound Magic by the Afro Celt Sound System today, and it's quite good... very earthy, and less dancy then their newest album... I love these guys... I know most people aren't interested in World Music here, but you should give some of these albums a listen, this one, Passion, etc... they're good... a different style, but I find that they're very earthy, and well, hard to explain, whereas I find electronic music cold, and sterile sometimes, so this is nice... you should all check it out...

ok, check out The Silken Whip, Colossus, Life Begin Again (with Robert Plant), Further in Time, those are from their new album... and from their first one I like Whirl-y-reel 1, Sure-as-not and Sure-as-knot (same track, different parts), House of the Ancestors, etc, etc... I love it personally... very nice and relaxing... makes me think of somewhere, umm, other then here... :)

what the hell IS world music? is it just the polite term for "foreign" music? (ie, not from western europe/n america)
..but with elements of more familiar music mixed in or what?

yeah it's a sort of proepithet word for non-western music, sometimes blended with western techniques/theory/approach/musicians, sometimes not.
I haven't heard much celtic stuff, but have studied and listened to a lot of classical indian music. What a system. Same for balinese gamelon music. And both, in my experimentation, offer great inspiration to electronic techniques. Polyrhythms and layering galore.
And then there's flamenco. And gypsy [sic] music. I could just die.
But I won't

i've seen those guys once, i thought the music from their first album was ok, had nice melodies, the second was much less though and then i got all irritated with their happy act,
i like the talvin sigh album with the master musicians of jajouka featuring bachir attar, because indian music is good, you should listen to that once,
i've also got this techno record from a radio program in hong kong, that's fun! (technasia).
well and that's been my effort for a better world
