Tom Waits - Real Gone

Got it on Valentine's Day. I really like all the grimy
noise he has going on here. What really surprised me was the
lack of piano. This album seems a lot rougher than his
others, but i enjoy it more so than Alice or Blood Money.
But it is just me or are Waits' vocals sort of drowned out
by some of the music? Maybe I have a crappy stereo...

The ten-minute plus songs (Sins of the Father) are okay but
I have to be in the proper mood for them, sort of like the
mood I have to be in to listen to the Moody Blues...

It's brilliant. I listened to it almost non-stop a few
months back when i was cutting down from one or two bottles
of whisky a day to fuck all. It's got some weird memories
attached but it'd be one of my favourites even if it didn't
mean quite a bit to me, i think.

"frank's wild years" and "swordfishtrombones" are nice
startingpoints, I think.

I'm not a fan of the more straighter stuff before that,
personally (he started his "weirder" period with
"swordfishtrombones").

The song 'Hoist That Rag' is excellence (thanks tolstoyed),
but I haven't really had much chance to investigate the
album further.

Buy "Bone Machine" That's the one you want

nah "bone machine" IS great, but not a very good
startingpoint.

I'd get "rain dogs" while you were there, too. It feels like
a kind of companion-piece to "swordfishtrombones" in a way,
at least for me. They're structured very similarly i guess.

I agree, Alex.

and I think "Frank's wild years" connects to both of those
rather nicely.

Bone Machine is the album that started it for me... I own a
big chunk of his stuff now thanks to that record

I must admit that's one i've not heard... i made the mistake
of completely overdosing on the gravelly-voiced one as i was
first getting into his stuffs, so it's been a while before i
could really listen to him again. "Frank's wild years" has
been duly added to the Big List, though.

Good production on this. Love the rickety bayou cabin vibe.

I've recently burned copies of "Blood Money" and "Alice"
which I got from my local library. "Blood Money" is my
current favorite of the two. I've had "Bone Machine" for
years but I prefer this one to it by far. Sexy shit.

I agree that Rain Dogs is also a decent starting point for a
new Waits listener. Most of his stuff before then is
singer-songwriter material, pretty stuff (i like some of it,
especially Tom Traubert's Blues) but not CLASSIC Waits
material.

My favorite song on Real Gone so far is "Don't Go Into That
Barn." God, those vocal backtracks are excellent. This song
is creepy in a good groovy dark way.

yr best off starting with closing time... it has melody,
very warm. i then suggest small change which should open u
up 2 the rest of his stuff, rather than being thrown
straight in 2 the deep end.

I love the album but the intended "recorded at the wrong
bit/sampling rate" sound kinda fustrates me.

yes, i like the grimyness but i also felt the recording
style sort of buried Waits' lyrics.
