i have one of these Harman/kardon speakers for my
computer...
and a good enough Philips stereo... But the cd function is
broken.
So i play my cd's from the dvd with the stereo's
amplifiers...
It works very weLL... it's got Woox base... Im satisfied.
I use the stereo speakers for my turntable asweLL....

All in all... i really can't complain.

no.

i fucking hate cd players. can't seem to find one that works
without "bugs", no matter whether it's a cheap portable one
or an expensive hi-fi one.

CD players got really shit when they started using standard
CD-ROM units to cut costs thus relying on shitty error
correction to iron out poor disc reading.

I realised why I like vinyl today. Its fucking BIG!

when i tried to put ok computer, which i bought 5 years ago
and hadn't listened to for 2 years , into my cd-player a few
days ago (the first time in ages i used my cd-player) and
the player couldnt read it i realized that that's another
main-pro for vinyl. you dont have to sit in front of your cd
player for 15 minutes and clean the cd again and again til
the player finally reads it.

i don't have speakers yet except my computer's, i almost
always use headphones... if i get less shy about exposing my
music tastes in public maybe i'll get speakers : )

if i want to play a cd, i have:
• my computer, but the ventilator makes a lot of noise
when playing it (whereas it's really silent otherwise)
• a philips portable cd player which spits some parasite
noises on some cds, in-between the tracks, but also
sometimes inside the tracks (rarely but it happens)
• a marantz cd player which keeps on skipping (short
bursts of silence where there shouldn't be any, and when i
replay the same part it plays fine again) from time to time
for no apparent reason (or maybe it's because my room is
dusty), and also can't read hidden tracks before track 1
(ok, i only know three cds who have this, so it's no big
deal - the skipping thing is annoying though)

...
sometimes i just convert the cd i want to listen to in mp3
256 kbps.

I'm not satisfied, but I would have been if I hadn't
listened to all that amazing stuff at the hifistores all the
time... it's a H/K dvd 22, Yamaha RX-v440 amp, tech 1210
turntable and vestax pmc 05 pro III and audio pro focus sa-5
speakers. The audiopros pack quite a punch for two-way
speakers, so bass isn't a problem, and the highs and lows
are well enough defined that I puke at mp3s if I have the
vinyl version...

I wish I had a clearaduio master reference turntable running
through a decent vinyl amp (haven't been looking too much at
dedicated amps for vinyl) to two classé mono-block amps
that drive either martin logan electrostatic speakers or
Bauers & Wilkins nautilus... and then a separate surround
setup, but I don't know which amp/player I would go for
then...

I know there are better setups than this, but this is about
the best I've heard (not all in the same setup, though, and
never the clearaudio master reference, 'cause it takes too
long to set up).

also, another wise thing to do is to clean your vinyls too -
then the needle suffers less

you mean with some cleaning fluid? hm, i never thought it
was neccessary since all my vinyls sound very good (pretty
few cracking noises), but then again i already had to
replace my needle 3 times, i guess, or even four (but one
time was because i accidently actively destroyed it) from
1999 - 2005.

i mean like taking the dust off a record with a specific
tool. i once saw such thing at my friend's house. i was
surprised and she said it should be done everytime you want
to play a vinyl - dust it then play it.

i don't do it though :)

ah, sounds slightly stressful. i even used to have such
device, but it didnt really seem to work though, there was
not less dust on the record after i tried to dust off the
dust. you merely shifted the dust to another place on the
record. maybe my fault.

off-topic : are You coming to that Autechre gig in Berlin ?

i guess not. since i would have to go by train this would
mean around 110 euros for train-tickets and i dont have
that. at first an acquaintance, who wanted to drive to
berlin on the same day (even though not to see autechre)
wanted to pick me up, be he doesnt go, so i aint either (i
neither have a car nor driver's license).

I need to upgrade my speakers as I have to limit the volume
as my amp overdrives them and decent CD player. I was
orginally planning on panel speakers but they have been
superseded. The warmth of sound is great in any case my
vinyl probably best (Marantz Gold Series Class A turntable).
I was building my system before I met Flea 12 years ago and
he made me broke so we will see.

I have a wide angle brush for the vinyl and a tiny brush for
the needle, I use the brush each time I play a vinyl as it
stops dust from accumulating as you play the record you
clean it. I used to buy a spray formula and clean my vinyl
on a regular basis with a soft cloth. The CD/DVD cleaning
cloths will do the job as long as you follow the grain.
