The Life Aquatic was great. But I still have my qualms;
SPOILERS
1) The action scenes seemed ever so slightly contrived, the way that Bill Murray takes on all those pirates was pretty unconvincing, and not that in the good way.
2) The 'band of eccentric characters' formula was also pretty contrived as well, I thought. But similarly to Tenenbaums and Rushmore, the characters had won me over by the end.
3) Cate Blanchett's fucking voice. She handled it easily in Lord of the Rings, so why does it sound so whiny here??

Yeah I know. I was hardly expecting Bill Murray somersaulting in bullet-time with twin glocks...
I don't know, I think I was still kind of getting into the film at that stage so it's no surprise it didn't work for me.

4) At the film's climax, a group of people in the cinema started howling with laughter. Not even in that private joke-y way. It was as if they were expecting everyone else to be laughing as well, but they completely ruined it for me :0

I loved how everything looked staged - one big piece of theatre. reminded me a bit of Peter Greenaway films, because of the lavish and colourful decors that seem to only be a representation of reality.
I thought Blanchett was great too - it actually took me a while to recognise it was her.
only one I didn't like much was Willem Dafoe, who I normally like but I thought his role was a bit superfluous in a way.

yeah, the outlook of the film was fantastic..those underwater and boat scenes especially.
as for dafoe, i liked him a lot actually, and i wish he had a bigger part..it was fun seeing him in those short pants..i was quite surprised he only had such a small part, it appeard almost like he was in it only because that red cap really suited his head :) and ofcourse he's just the right persong for the role of a german bus driver :)

if it goes so far that it takes me out of the scene, that I have a hard time believing it, I don't like it.
to me "the royal tenenbaums" was very forcedly trying to be "wacky", whereas for example "rushmore" and now "the life aquatic" pull this off without ever feeling very forced.

hey, i just saw this yesterday (finally)!
he did a great job of capturing this sea-expedition fantasy world - so immersive and subtly-detailed. it was just pure magic. it was very good, i thought. i used to watch those cousteau documentaries as a kid all the time... this was like the ultimate nostalgia/homage/parody all in one. i loved that about it.
the only things i didn't like about it was that at the end it was a bit melodramatic at moments and felt sort of choppy.
in some ways this is anderson's most artistically-successful film and in others it falls short of his earlier works. on its own, though, it is great.
i thought the music was really cool - i loved the casio electronica. :)

haha, that tekkno music scenes were awesome. i was a huge fan of those cousteau films as well..infact i enjoy just about any film connected to sea..
"the end it was a bit melodramatic at moments" yeah, i could almost agree with that, but the fact that there was irony present all the time it taked a bit of that melodramatics away..for me anyway :) it was so subtle though, that i wasn't sure whether some scenes were meant to be funny or melodramatic :)

well, the thing is that in rushmore and even the royal tennenbaums, the emotions are captured so well... i never needed to question the emotional scenes in those films. they were so real to me. but this one is almost like a surreal experiment.
the action scenes were fantastic. they were so unexpected and really bizarre in the best possible way.
the only thing about this movie that i don't like is that it is a little too formulaic. i felt it should break away more from his other films, and it did in some ways, but in other ways he was focusing on things he touched on in earlier films and amplified and exaggerated them. so it is the same but different. :)

the theater i saw it in took away from my experience - the bottom of the screen was cut off so i couldn't read half the subtitles and the picture was slightly blurry. the sound was so quiet and there was a guy near me who kept going, "this movie is so stupid... so stupid!" over and over to impress his mum i guess.

yes, i agree with what you're saying..this was definitely the most surreal one, and it sort of made more sense to me when i saw it the 2nd time around..and yes, eventhough this was a bit different to tennenbaums and rushmore it would maybe be better if he'd try something different next time..i'd love to see the same cast again though!
