hi,
i recently discussed with some friends what rdj's impact on music in general is.
i really believe, that in some years from now, rdj will be fully regarded and acepted as contemporary composer. (like phillip glass or kronos quartet)
it's funny to imagine people sitting in classic concert-venues, listening to orchestral interpretations of aphex-stuff.
what do you think will remain of aphextwin's music in 20, 30 or 50 years? will it become part of the heritage of contemporary music, or will it just be played on oldie-radio or webradiostations? "the greatest underground hits of the 90ies and 00ies" ??
?!

time is the only one that can tell anyway if i go to the auditorium to listen to aphex music i would like it to be the original... i mean no orchestra´s reinterpretations (if so, made by him)

don't forget that rdj is a master in self-promoting. how often did he say he wouldn't release new material?
maybe he won't release any new stuff on warp records. but who cares? he'll release on rephlex....

i don't think it's going to be regarded as classical music, i think it's just the avant-garde of dance, but maybe the difference between these styles will fade and it''ll become just classic but then not as a style

but it's already a fact that rdj's music's concidered important to contemporary (not really classic) music. and frankly, most of the recent releases can't be classified as dance-music.

I reckon he won't release under his old name on rephlex and in a few years time it'll turn out that a 'new' rephlex artist is actually him.

I'm no musicologist. However, Aphex Twin strikes me as a genius, as a lasting artist who will be highly regarded in the future. I was reading a question and answer with the musician for whom I hold the most respect - Pat Metheny - and he thinks quite highly of Aphex Twin and Squarepusher. This just confirmed my thoughts about Aphex. joey

i've always thought that aphex twin's catalogue of music is the type of music that is meant to be studied in text books 50 years from now. i love certain groups/artists like nin, radiohead, autechre, mogwai, etc. but i don't think they're on the same level of originality and passion. i can't think of anyone else who has come out since 1980 at the moment who deserves to be in text books along the likes of beethoven and chopin, and i listen to all types of music. hats off to aphex for 17 years of creativity, and fuck the haters (you know who you are).

Because of the way western society has evolved in the last 50 years, I think it highly unlikely that any single artist will be remembered in the way Beethoven, Mozart etc.... are today. Music has become so widely accessible and FAR more people are in a position to be making music themselves and can get their music heard. If everyone making music today was limited to a sampler, some synths, and a few drum machines (as classical composers were largly limited to piano/violin etc) then indeed I think he would be remembered for his ability. With so many genres and tastes out there readily available to the public, I have a hard time believing that aphextwin will ever be written about in text books.

there was a voting question on this wasn't there? I think that he'll probably be remembered as Kraftwerk are now, an innovator, and a highly influencial one at that... especially with the increasing popularity of this music that I think is inevitable with bands like Radiohead, and Nine Inch Nails and stuff...

Whether or not rdj's innovations will be codified and catalogued in textbooks, I can say for sure that he has been noticed and influential in various fields of contemporary composition/performance. He has and will likely continue to make a mark.

He reminds me of the Beatles... (here we go again)... there's technically superior artists (Harrison was no Hendrix, and Richard is no Jenkinson, musically), but their creativity and range is so great... and they both evolved at light speed. From A Hard Day's Night and Digeridoo, to Because and Ziggomatic... they both went a long way, musically. They're both chameleons, and everyone follows their lead. You can't peg either of them to one style.
And they both have huge, bloated, criticized double albums... well, I think Aphex will out out an Abbey Road soon, a really perfect album... I can't wait.
One thing I hope they differ in is career length... I don't want Aphex to quit for decades, and the Beatles were only around for 6 or 7 years.
That makes me cry. :-(

Maybe a comparison to the Velvet Underground is more apt: "they didn't sell very many records, but that everyone who bought one of their albums went on to start a band."
Don't get me wrong, I think RDJ is really talented and a creative genius, I just can't lump him in with the Beatles and Beethoven.

Oh no, RDJ is a LOT better than the VU. Velvet Underground=OVERRATED. You can go through RDJ's career and hear all these different stlyes and phases, hear his development... the VU is pretty generic.
They're just... boring. I was so disapointed when I heard all these underground guys talking about how brilliant Reed was, and how the VU were the most important band ever... it was so underwhelming hearing them at last, and just... blah. This was shortly after I became a Beatlemaniac, and after hearing all the fun, insane (sometimes lighthearted, sometimes WEIRD) stuff the Beatles did... the VU was a real anti-climax. I like them, and I'm a VU fan, BUT... they're not all they're cracked up to be.
Whoops, didn't mean for my post to be about the VU...
Anyway... RDJ's broad catalogue is what reminds me of the Beatles... every possible style you can think of. And he's FUN! Squarepusher, Autechre, BOC... all sorely lacking FUN, and the RDJ creativity. He's actually got a sense of humor, like the Beatles. Not taking it seriously, you can tell.
Fuck the VU, RDJ has the creativity, the influence, the talent, the dynamics, the fun, the people copying his every move, and he's pretty popular... he's the Beatles of electronics, I think.

would RDJ still be active by that time? i heard that the title "drukqs" itself indicates his conclusion to his Aphex Twin project, since "druk" is from the Dutch "drukken", meaning "to press" (correct me if i'm wrong), and "q" is for "quit", but i don't know what the "s" is for.
i may be wrong, though. we'll just rely on the usual news & press.
