its a compression format invented by apple to protect copyright non-sense through the itunes music store
you cant share them (from my experience) you have to be the registered user of said itunes/ipod/etc to use them
its a way of protecting an investment of 99cents per
yay apple

aac-files:
It is the format iTunes music store uses, but not all are copyprotected. You can rip music in iTunes in that format and spread them like the plague. The quality is better than mp3. A 128 m4a file is slightly better than a 192 mp3 file.

no point converting m4a to anything else... it'll make it sound more compressed and shitty unless it's left as a wav, possibly.

I had the same problem with .m4a files and I finally found this converter. It's a little confusing at first, but once you figure it out it is pretty easy. The music seems to retain it's quality fairly well too. I converted all my m4a files to mp3 and they sound as good as all my other mp3s.
You have to download the mp4 codecs here:http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central.htm
You're gonna have to copy and past, cuz I cant seem to figure out how to post a link :(
