anyone else watch this "previously banned" film on ch4 the other night? Its a Lars van Tier film .. the guy who made "breaking the waves" and "dancer in the dark".
Its about a group of social dropouts who pretend to be mentally handicapped in public places. Yeah i know...whacky!
Anyway, it seemed real eurotrashy for the most part and i couldn't wait for the thing to be finished but it was oddily compelling all the same.. the acting was really good and just the tenseness of some of the scenes was great. The sex scene it was banned for ... was about 5 seconds of actual penetration (by porn standins).. was no big thang really.
...in the end though, it was just plain odd and confusing.

I thought it was crap the first time I saw it. Didn't think much when I started trying to watch it again.

This is the film that made me a fan of Trier's work - seen it 3 times. The story is quite good IMO.

It's alright, but I couldn't really empathise with any of the characters. The girl who joins and continues her spasticity in front of her family is quite a good character and when they leave the bloke "in character" with the bike gang it's quite funny.
Most of the characters got on my nerves though, sort of people who'd wind me up in real life. I saw a documentary on it where they had real disabled people commenting on it and also a day when the actors met some real disabled people, (whilst in character!) as a form of research. That was quite interesting...

trier is pretty pretentious director i think..what's the point of being a film director if you make a film that looks like anyone with a video camera could do it..this dogma 12 thing is just silly..i saw the idiots couple of times, i guess it was alright since i bothered to watch it twice, but nothing too special as some people seem to think of it..

I think the point is that making it look like a film does not a film make, or in other words: anyone can hold a camera and film, but that does not make them a film director.

i've never seen that one, allthough i heard about it. A lot pf poeple think that it's hilarious. I might rent it one of these days... von trier gives me a headache most of the time. The shaky camera hurts... But i like his stories and shit most of the time.

its definitely not hilarious for a start....imagine mtv's "jackass" meets an unfunny danish verion of "the office" but starring really good actors. You can't?.. well, thats "the idiots" for you.
"Breaking the waves" is something extraordinary though.

he's gone a bit to far with it imo opinion ofcourse..personally i just prefer visually attractive films..even dogma 12 films can look more proffesional than that..i just don't see the point of it really..not really bothered by it either, i liked quite a few films..
