what's the story with ipods these days, the original ones,
they only seem to be selling 20gb versions, and no 40gb
ones?

is this some sort of ploy to force people to pay more for
fucking colour screens and suchlike when it's completely
unneccessary in an effing emmpeethree player?

that they stopped making that one.

As time goes on the once great Apple continue to slide
further down the slippery slope of companies that take the
piss out of consumers, my brother is on his third I-pod in
about 9 months and I've got too many horror stories to
mention about their gear, the sad fact is that they have me
by the balls but I'll never buy a brand new Apple product
ever again.

"As time goes on the once great Apple continue to slide

i must be lucky then because i've owned a few different
ipods over the years and not had one problem.

I've got the 6GB ipod mini at the moment and its definately
the best mp3 player i've ever owned!

agreed. it's fucking dissapointing to see every
single fucking company that once really cared about their
customers fail to give a shit and turn into greedy corporate
fucks intent on ripping the crap out of their customers once
they're large enough to get away with it.

when you're small, ensuring your customers are happy is
paramount. once you've reached some marketing nirvana with
your product(s) where people blindly buy them anyway (ie:
ipod), it'd be a fucking miracle to not see said company
turning into total unreasonable dickheads.

i guess it's what happens when you go public; companies stop
giving a shit about customers and start giving a shit about
making their shareholders wallets fatter, as they're
certainly pressured to do that. it'd be nice if there could
be a system implemented where focus could exist outside of
profit, but it's too fucking late now; laws are fucking
/made/ for these types of companies, as they're virtually
run by them. the internet is a great place for free speech
and potential consumer awareness, but hell, even that's
being clamped down on now.

i rant way too much. that was more of a general rant rather
than directed at apple; i've always found my powerbooks
reliable, and a logic board problem with my girlfriend's
ibook was replaced without too many dramas under warranty.

i've seen many signs in the past few years that they're
quickly starting to spiral down the greedy-corporate hole,
though. the way they market the ipod is pure genius, but
they're sure as hell abusing that.

heh yeah they've always been rather selfish like that. some
would argue that's part of the reason why they almost went
fucking broke at one stage.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I lust over apple's stuff just
like most other nerds, but as far as I can tell they're
acting like they always have... like a company, who's main
goal is making money.

They've just got a genius counter-culture marketting scheme.

offline epohs from )C: on 2005-03-09 08:58 [#01526805]
Points: 17620 Status: Lurker

Well, they certainly like to play themselves as youthful
outsiders. An alternative to the usual. Apple seems to
target "free thinkers" more than the business crowd.

I'm not sure exactly how to clarify.. I guess it depends on
your definition of "counter-culture".. I suppose I align
"counter-culture" with youth and rebeliousness... both very
strong qualities in apples advertising.

i'd agree with that, but the associations they've created
with their products is genius in many ways; it also appeals
/to/ the non 'alternative' crowd simultaneously. i'd love
to see the thinking that goes into their marketing, or
whether it's just pure fluke.

Well some of you peopel must be very unlucky. I've worked in
the same design studio for nearly 10 years and every Mac
we've had (must be about 12) has been great, maybe 1
hard-disk failure and thats it. I've got 6 or 7 friens with
iPods and no problems.

As for getting rid of the 40gb, I think the are slowly
phazing out the b/w iPod in favour of the iPod Photo which
will just become the iPod. So I don't think anybody is
getting ripped off, with every upgrade you get more for your
money. The iPod photos have better battery life too, so I
don't see what the problem is.

You can still get an Iriver H340 if you look around...... I
have one, and it's pretty bloody fantastic. Unlike the Ipod
photo, you can actually watch films on it too (if you
upgrade the firmware).

It's not just a problem with the durability of their
products (I've had my G3 for about 6 years with no serious
problems)although I know that this does exist with I-pods.
The fact is that Apple do things that practically redefine
the term "taking the piss", here are a few to be getting on
with

1.No I-tunes compatibility for any OS lower than X, why not?
it's just an MP3 player for chrissakes, I don't want to have
to get a new computer just so I can run an I-pod, my G3
should be perfectly capable of doing this but it won't run
OSX so I'm screwed in that department.
2.What's wrong with having a simple compartment that allows
you to take out and replace your I-pod battery with ease,
why make it so bloody difficult and then have your warranty
voided for the privelage?
3.Why did Apple buy up Soundjam (the forunner to I-tunes)
and then block any access users of this software used to
have to the CDDB? giving them no choice but to go over to
Iitunes if they want to carry on using that service.
4.Why does it cost more to have their monitors repaired than
it does to buy a brand new one?
5.When my replacable CDR drive malfunctioned why was Apple's
soloution to this problem "buy a new computer"? obviously
this is totally ridiculous when the drive can be so easily
replaced.

these are just a few things that I have experienced in
recent times, I'm sure other people have more stories.

iTunes used to be available for OS 9… but then again, how
long should they be having to reverse engineer everything?
OS 9 is dead, they can't support it forever.

It was never availble for I-pod use on OS9,
OS9 is not dead, I still use it for one, and if by dead you
mean "not supported" then who's to blame for that?

The fact is that it would be easy for Apple to make an I-pod
compatible OS9 version of I-tunes, the reason one doesn't
exist is because it would mean less people buying into OSX
(something that I can't do because my whole studio is based
around OS9)
Hell, if Apple were a decent company they'd make I-tunes
available for ALL their OS that could run on any USB
compatible computer.

Many companies have cottoned on to the fact that there are a
lot of morons out there who think they have a Wild Side to
their banality and so they tr4de on that.

I have a blue and white smurf tower, 350mhz with about 500mb

just worried about classic mode not being able to run my

Yes, aside from music makers who use macs, a lot of their
customers are "lifestyle" bandwagon saps who seem to think
buying a PC that can only run about 10% of the programs,
costs twice as much and looks like some 70s modern art in
transparent acrylic, somehow defines them as unique,
creative and individual.

(It really defines them as having more money than sense and
as being a marketing man's wet dream.)

That said, good for sound, eh? ;-)

But! just got a call from my mom, she'd been onto the

she's rang around shops and there are a few shops that still
have 1 or 2 of them.. so hopefully they aren't damaged 2nd
