I wonder if, on some of the tracks, the piano is prepared,
or digitally altered, or what? Someone told me, before I
heard the album, that there's some great prepared piano, but
I don't know where his info came from.

I was told that some of them were prepared. I like them a
great deal. I especially enjoy the tracks with the
harmonium (the eastern string sounding instrument). Some
people say they are nothing but filler but I think they add
to the album and make for good breaks between the drill 'n
bass tracks.

the variations on the drukqs album is the one thing that
makes it totaly brilliant! Confusing at first but after a
while it all makes sense. :)

I kinda consider drukqs to be 4 diff EPs...

With one of em being just the piano tracks...

Seems to work better for me...(plus it's fun making your own
drukqs...)...

He said in a swedish radio interview that he had a custom
made piano that could be programed. He didn't design
it,someone made it for him.
That was right before Windowlicker came out.

grands?... and fucked around...sorry I mean, prepared, one
of em....

midi

with the real piano-tracks you can hear richard's no
viruoso: with avril 14th, which sounds pretty tough to play,
i think you hear a metronome, but that's just a cool effect.
kesson dalef on the other hand would have been better with
more technique, the left hand is way to simple, the right
should have been a bit more complicated to make the melody
even more beautiful, that's my opinion at least

Jag och Raimons såg Calle Dernulf i en skivafär för
några veckor sedan, han provlyssnade bland annat på
Squarepushers "Untitled" promo.
Intresant fakta va!

richard knows how to play the piano......and i'm sure that
is him playing and not some sample.

imho....drukqs is a masterpiece.....and the piano pieces are
some of my favorite.

i appreciate artists who are classically trained pianists
...trent reznors IS...and his work on his new CD is
amazing.....

well on drukqs it is nice for the variety, but if you listen
to classical music, not just rachmaninov but also, relativly
more simple, des regendruppel from chopin, for instance,
it's hard not to feel disappointed in richard's technique,
by which i mean the simpleness of what he plays (again: not
on avril 14th). i feel that in this case it wouldn't have
been a shame to have handed the composition of some of these
songs over to some really classical trained piano-player.
which, on another note, he could have done with the
mastering or mixing of drukqs too, because when listening
drukqs i can't help hearing, or rather feeling, richard's
aversion to this kind of work; with the richard d james
album, for instance, i feel that he put a lot more love into
into those details.
(i hope i made a point come across here)

i believe sir, you made your point! (=

i agree richard is not the most amazing pianist around, but
i appreciate his less than perfect work on drukqs

I:On the cover of „Drukqs“ there’s a photo of the
inside of a piano. And on the album you’ve includ-ed quite
a few piano pieces.

RDJ: I’ve loved pianos since I was little. The one I used
to have as a child got woodworm and my mum had to sell it
because the worms were eating all the
wood in the house and I was really upset. A year and a half
ago I bought a new piano, it’s a midi-controlled one from
Yamaha. They usually have them in hotels where the keys all
plat themselves. People with too much money own them
(laughs). That bloke from Take That, Gary Balow has got
one. He’s got a white one though and I wouldn’t get a
white one. I was going to have four of them all linked
together for live shows.

-------
I:This is the first time that you’ve recorded the piano
for a record, isn’t it?

RDJ: No, I haven’t really done piano tracks before. I
thought that I could keep my piano for a few more years and
then release stuff and it’s going to be loads more
accomplished. But I like to put things out early and
it’s my first effort.

---------
I:Some of the tracks sound very simple on others it seems
as if you have prepared the piano.

RDJ: Yeah. A lot of the tracks are modified. I’ve
pre-pared the strings. I use screws and nails and bits of
rubber, I’ve made lots of little things so that you can
change the harmonics of the strings. When I bought this
piano, because it was really expansive, I thought I am going
going to break it straight away if I’d started to take it
apart. So for one year
I just did very normal piano tracks and then after one year
I started to take it apart. I’ve also done some really
complicated ones, sort of electronic ver-sions, which are
really programmed. But I didn’t put any of these on the
album because I wanted to put out the really simple ones
first
. My favourite piano tracks are really simple ones.
I don’t like it when they are flamboyant. Satie for
example is my favourite piano composer. His tracks are
deceptive-ly
simple, he’s not wasting any not

The actual sheet music and midi's for two of the piano track
(avril 14th, and Kesson Daslef) are available on this site.
Just do a search for "midi" from the main page, I think
that'll get yo there...

i do not believe that rdj manually played a prepared piano
or what ever. i think that he made a brilliant job in
sampling and rearanging lots of different pianosounds. for
me, the piano-pieces show, that rdj is a great composer and
producer. i don't think he's a brilliant pianist...

agreed.
i still wonder what makes avril 14th sound like it does
though, originally i thougt that was a midi controlled piano
because it's played so in time and all the notes are
seemingly at the same volume, but on second listening (or
rather 200th) it's just maybe somebody playing with a
metronome

sampling and rearanging lots of different piano sounds?

you must be kidding?

it's more likely that he:
a) played the piano himself
b) programmed the piano via MIDI

Anyone here like Erik Satie (French composer the drukqs
piano pieces are meant to sound like)?

I particularly like "Danses Gothique" and the Sarabandes.

Personnally, i prefer the more abstract piano pieces. While
i still love avril 14th and kesson daslef, i like the
seeming randomness of them. When you listen to them after a
while the move past the randomness, and kind of make sense,
and then you can enjoy the suttle beauty of them.
