The phrase four-letter word refers to a set of English words
written with four letters which are considered profane,
including common popular or slang terms for excretory
functions, sexual activity, and genitalia.

Common four-letter words (in this sense) include:fuck, cunt,
damn, piss, shit, tits and twat. These, in addition to at
least ten others, are widely considered vulgar or offensive
to some degree.

A similar tradition in the Dutch language occurs with
"three-letter words": (kut, pik, lul, gvd)

In French, the word merde ("shit") is sometimes referred to
as les cinq lettres ("the five letters").

Another interesting meaning of "four-letter word" (in Greek,
tetragrammaton) is the Hebrew name of the Abrahamic god,
that is, éäåä (commonly transliterated as "YHWH",
"Yahweh", and "Jehovah"), which Jews did not speak aloud.

The Seven dirty words are seven words that were prohibited
from use on broadcast media in the United States, including
both over-the-air television and radio stations. The
original list of seven is:

shit
piss
fuck
cunt
cocksucker
motherfucker
tits

The initials M.F. became a common, more polite substitute
for motherfucker, as did the term Maryland farmer in the
1960s and 1970s. The result is an oft-recounted, if
apocryphal, tale of the clueless Maryland Farmers
Association writing a letter of protest to a prominent
African-American in the news. It seems he called a Capitol
Hill politician a "jive Maryland farmer," and the
association's members were mightily offended.
