this is some spooky stuff..apperantly they used to castrate young boys (usually at age 10) so they kept their high voices because women were forbidden to perform at that time.. the last one to be castrated was alessandro morescchi - he had to be castrated before 1870, because that was the year they outlawed it. there's this album of him singing that was recorded in 190x, and the most disturbing part is when you try to imagine +40 years old man singing with a voice of a boy... |

it is weird and creepy indeed... and from the sound of it, i'd say he's not actually a very good singer. is it just me or is he a bit off-pitch and wobbly? |

I cant really judge cultures against this one, as they are different and have different reasons for doing things and different psychologies, and 19 century europe is no different. Its fortunate that they managed to retain a recording of this bizarre means of mutilation. Remix project underway... |
