castrated singers

this is some spooky stuff..apperantly they used to castrate
young boys (usually at age 10) so they kept their high
voices because women were forbidden to perform at that
time.. the last one to be castrated was alessandro morescchi
- he had to be castrated before 1870, because that was the
year they outlawed it. there's this album of him singing
that was recorded in 190x, and the most disturbing part is
when you try to imagine +40 years old man singing with a
voice of a boy...

fully song

another one

"Back in the 17th Century, when women were barred from
appearing on stage or singing in churches, the roles of
sopranos were routinely filled by castrati; men who had been
castrated during childhood so the pure high tones of their
unbroken boyhood voices could be maintained indefinitely.
This practice, banned in 1870, was too late for Alessandro
Moreschi, captured here in 1902 on a wax cylinder recording
of what may be the only known recorded performance of a
Castrato." -- wfmu.org / wfmu's on the download

disturbing..

it is weird and creepy indeed... and from the sound of it,
i'd say he's not actually a very good singer. is it just me
or is he a bit off-pitch and wobbly?

1902... fuck, that's a few years ago now isn't it??

I love ancient recordings like these, any more? Castrati or
otherwise?

this is horrible to think that 'they' could do that to
someone. my old choir teacher was an Alto and only like 35
years old, so i wonder if it still goes on.....

which is sort of the same thing..

actually do to them? i've never known, but i'm sure its not
pleasant.

best vote ever: On a hot tin roof.
Curled up next to me snoring.
Smothered in chocolate sauce.
Wearing polka-dotted leotards and high-heels in the grocery
store.
Covered in condoms dancing the tango at a nursing home.
Nursing a ring of fire with ointment.
With a puzzled look and a lit firecracker in his drawers.
In the kitchen, naked and barefoot.
Other.
Dressed like Ricardo Montalban serinading with a tuba.

Thanks! We listened to one in a music history class I took
in highschool, and ever since, I have been wanting to hear
it again. Eerie.

well, yeah, i thought this was well-known... : |

at least they're not doing it anymore. and at least they had
"something" to replace their testicles, somehow.

whereas female circumcision is still practiced in many
countries.

I read recently about a surgeon who does restorative surgery
on women who've had this done - the clitoris is much longer
internally than you'd imagine and he can cut a few ligaments
so more of it will be exposed.

I have a complete album en route. Only an hour more in
slsk.

I think it sounds really neat, not as strange as some seem
to be thinking. I cant really judge cultures against this
one, as they are different and have different reasons for
doing things and different psychologies, and 19 century
europe is no different. Its fortunate that they managed to
retain a recording of this bizarre means of mutilation.

Remix project underway...
