Yeah, props have gone on the record as saying they'll never implement VSTs- the reason Reason is so CPU friendly/stable is that they know exactly what is running in it. I can sort of see their point. You can easily rewire it to things like ableton and then use that as a VST host, but it gets a bit fiddly, I tend to just export the reason parts (eg bass, drums, synth, etc.) seperately and then import those into my vst host to add vst instruments in.
I do agree VSTs rule the roost, quality-wise.

See, the problem I have with doing that [rendering and then mastering] is a certain ammount of spontinaety is lost using that technique. A vast majority of the interesting things I do I just think up on the spot, and if I don't do it within a minute its forgotten. I like using the DrRex player, and its possible to get very interesting parabolic rhythms using the maelstrom synthesizer (although why they don't think of a means to import your own handcrafted wavforms is beyond me). I just think the subtractor and the two other samplers and all the effects are kind of weak. I mean, you are sacrificing sound over PC.
I mean, just as reasonable an idea is getting a $300 souncard, using audiomulch or buzz and a bunch of freeware vst's.
On a side note, the Waves mastering tools and effects are amazing. As well, Fxpansion has some very interesting tools out there, as does iZotope, as does GRM Tools (you can get the same kind of sounds from reaktor or absynth when you use their Combs Filter, Reson Filter and Delays on even the simplest of synthesizers, such as neon or the tbl bassline)

I remember reading a quite lengthy explanation of the reasons why it's not feasible to easily make alternate waveforms for malstrom (this was from one of the props themselves). However, if it's like granular synthesis and just uses slices, we already have an ideal tools for prepping them: Recycle/Dr. Rex- you could load your own waveforms/samples in, already cut into grains. It'd be a really good feature for Reason and might attract some interest from people who wouldn't otherwise use it.
The loss of spontenaetiy (which is one of the reasons I use Reason- very quick) is a pain and if you're prepared to plod along using other programs/vsts, you could just do the whole track in those.
