I'm a big David Cronenberg fan.
there's a region 1 release of "fast and furious", which is a kind of racing picture he has done which isn't very interesting. but it also has a second disc containing the two first films he has made - "stereo" and "crimes of the future".
those are very interesting if you like the themes Cronenberg adresses - but I wouldn't begin with them.. :)
his early horrorfilms are certainly very interesting, especially "shivers" (which is also known as "they came from within" and "the parisite murders") and "the brood".
he continues building the uneasiness about the human body in these films.
but I have to agree, his seminal work is "Videodrome". this would be a good startingpoint, I think. it's a film I can see time and time again (and I must've seen it about 30 times by now, I think). the criterion edition is excellent and not at all expensive if you buy it through the American Amazon.
a few others have been mentioned - "dead ringers" is very good in a psychological thriller and completely depressing way.
"the dead zone" is the best Stephen King adaptation and has some of the most crisp, beautiful photography in a Cronenberg-film.
"scanners" is a classic horrorfilm -interesting if you like Cronenberg but otherwise I wouldn't bother.
"the fly" is quite good - it has the classic Cronenberg themes about fear of aging and fear of the body deteriorating. nice and gloopy!
"naked lunch" is good but kind of drowns in its own weirdness, I think. especially Judy Davis is good in that one.
I liked "crash", but it kind of loses momentum towards the end. the women are especially good in this film.
"eXistenZ" can be fun but it's a bit silly. it does raise a few interesting points.
"spider" is excellent - very tight. I don't think most Cronenberg fans saw this one coming but at the same time it also is typical Cronenberg.

a new Cronenberg film "a history of violence", starring Viggo Mortensen (!) is in post-production. "An average family is thrust into the spotlight after the father commits a seemingly self-defense murder at his diner." could be interesting.

That Cronenberg flick sounds like Chabrol territory...
Anyway, I like The Fly, Videodrome, and Scanners a lot.

also noteworthy to point out that Howard Shore has done most of Cronenberg's soundtracks and these are in no way connected to the sappy shit he wrote for LotR.
especially the soundtracks for "scanners" and "videodrome" are good and very, very electronic. and weird.

so would people agree that scanners, videodrome, the dead zone and dead ringers are the ones worth getting?
In what order would you rate them? It would help me knowing which ones to get first :)

i haven't seen scanners, but my favorite of those is videodrome. dead zone is far less emotionally draining than dead ringers, so it has higher repeat viewing rate to me, but dead ringers is probably a better film.

"the brood" is quite interesting. "rabid" is quite weird.
both are more horrorfilms though.
start with "videodrome". if you like that, proceed onwards from there.
I don't think "scanners" is a good beginningpoint - it starts out very interesting but starts to sag and lag towards the middle part.

scanners, dead ringers, and the fly are my favourite cronenberg films
great canadian talent existenz and videodrome have a very similar theme, in fact existenz seems like a "videodrome 2000" of sorts in my opinion

for me videodrome is a very good base...in a way Existenz is a kind of double of videodrome (but based on game and not on tv/politic...very weird and deep scenario indeed)
the three firts : rabid/shivers/chromosome3 erotico - horror movies but you'll find his own world yet (shivers is simply awesome...).
Before those ones, you can find "stereo" and "crimes of the future" some very strange movies...shot with no money and no direct sound (very abstract things)...
But one of the most extraordinary movie is "Crash"...in a plastic way, it might be one of the most adventurous movie of the last decades...
And of course "the naked lunch" is an unbelievable movie about (and based on) william burroughs... I'm a great fan, you understood that, but the thing i really like is his ability to write movies that have two (at least) "reading points of view"...you can watch them as very simples stories (and popular) and you can fall deep into his world, his fears and desires, his reflection on this world (more abstract)
a great great director...

the sequels have nothing to do with Cronenberg - they take the premisse and make horrorfilm sequels with it.
