Just got it yesterday and it is really growing on me.

Not what I expected at all...

I think it's really bad. I had never listened to the Mars
Volta before, and this sounds like cock-rock to me. I was
expecting good music. What is going on?

it seems to divide people.

i like it, but theres something about every track lasting 4
hours that makes me not want to listen to it much

same feeling here...not a good interpretation of the debut
album.

ive listened to this a good few times now, i think the first
track is amazing, the second is average, and the last one
(subdivided into 10000 tracks) is very boring, overly long
and even the catchy bits are quite weak. Ah well. First
album is a lot more fun i think

I am hooked on this album now. My first impression was that
the tracks were too long winded but now I really like this.

Album of the year....

this album officially bores the piss out of me.
Vocal wankery and guitar masturbation to make up for a lack
of well thought out content. This album should have been an
EP.

Some parts of it are really good I think, but I think the
more experimental parts aren't really fitting. The 'noise'
type parts aren't even that good actually, and seem like
pointless noodling after the tracks reach a high point and
probably should end. I do love the more straightforward
tracks, but it's like they just tacked on a bunch of weird
sound effect parts to appear 'avant garde' or something.
The songwriting is the strongest point, I feel, but even in
the actual songs, some parts sound like a ten year old just
discovering a delay pedal or something. I'll need to let it
grow on me a bit longer probably.

compared to de-loused it's complete shit. only good tune is
cygnus vismund cygnus.

I have been listening to this a lot recently and although I
must admit I do prefer De Loused, It has parts that make the
hair stand up on the back of my neck.

The second Guitar solo on L'Via L'Viaquez gets me every
time.

Can any Spanish speakers translate what he is singing about
on this one for me?

I'm undecided as to wether this is good or just slightly
enjoyable. I haven't given it enough time on the cd-player
to have a final opinion, cause other records has pushed it
back in the listening-queue.

The Widow is catchy as hell, but the verses remind me of the
verses from "Hotel California" or something like that. Good
song though, minus the wanky keyboard stuff at the end.

Also, does anyone else perceive this guys lyrics as some
kind of one-man Dada revival at times? Not that it's a bad
thing, it's just a little much at times. But at other
times its captivating, when it's teetering between gibberish
and simple near-brilliance. ...Difficult to explain...

You mean like exo-sceletal junction at the railroad
delayed
from De-Loused? He's did lyrics like that in At
The Drive-In too, so I guess it's just his style of writing.

One-man Dada revival was a nice way of describing it, I
smiled a little when I read it.

...i got it lately, it's my third listen now and this is
likely to be my favourite album from 2005. i love it. (just
the endings of the tracks may be a bit overlong.)

I still don't why people like all the electronic noodlings
on it. I think they add to the atmosphere really well. I
have heard worse.

Still like this album alot.

I bought it when it came out, I think it's definitely an
acquired taste. I saw the Mars Volta in concert, and they
put on an insane live show. The lead singer is all over the
place, making bizarre noises. I give a thumbs up to both the
live show and the cd, though.
