I was driving around town last night listening to CBC Radio (they always have great music-people on there, any other Canadians like to cruise the streets listening to it?) and they were interviewing a couple of metrosexuals that are part of a group called the East Village Opera Company. And they are good, it was one of those radio programmes that made me decide to just drive around town even though I had nothing more to do out there. They made my drive so enjoyable that I really feel I owe them some advertising across several boards of musicpeople.
It's opera, know that in advance. They updated some classic old chunes with some new arrangements, sometimes with little touches like banjos and in other SENSATIONAL cases, like Questa O Quella, they even added an electric glam-rock carapace shell that is obviously very much like QUEEN. A rock opera geddit lol. It's swell and I hope these guys get famous, they were talking about how they've been getting surprisingly rapturous responses from crowds, and they even quit their dayjobs for this. So by all means, buy their stuff.
Official Site
Lots of clips. I recommend Questa for reasons stated above, it's the one that got my attention and made me stay on the station, and Panis Angelicus because it's pretty, non-bombastic and a good foil for Questa. Sugar and spice, baby, sugar and spice. Hopefully at least one person can enjoy this.

true, in most operas there's at least two stabbings, a rape and lots of lost and unrequited love.

Aww, schnookums.
And as far as opera goes, this isn't obnoxious stuff, they talked in the interviews about how technology enables them to make it a bit more ''subtle''. No need for wailing banshees screaming to get heard over a huge orchestra, they said. Listen to Panis Angelicus, nice stuff, goes down easy.

what? I'm not talking about Ophecks' link, I'm speaking of opera in general.
there's all the stuff that everyone thinks of when thinking of "opera" and then there is the more interesting stuff..

why not try "Three Tales" by Steve Reich?
he uses interviews with people directly in the music.

it has been released in a cd + dvd package. especially the dvd is nice, as his wife Beryl Korot has made a video that is supposed to run with the music.
