Why do so many people disregard this album? I think it's absolutely beautiful. It was the first Autechre album I bought and my first impression was 'wow' :) Touching melodies with lovely ambience. At first I thought they were some german electro band. It gave me a great relaxed feeling which I get everytime I listen to it. Sure it doesn't have as much content as more recent autechre albums but it's still an incredibly lush album. This album holds a great sense of nostalgia which i feel everytime i hear it, almost like the first SAW album does. Without a doubt, timeless and classic.

it's so hard to choose a favorite for me. mine use to be 'amber' but these days it's so hard to choose. each album is different from the other and is special in it's own way. i can definitely say amber, tri rep, lp5, chiastic slide and draft are up there.
also want to apologise for starting yet another autechre thread :)

I like this album the most of theirs, and since reading they ripped off some uncredited third party for it, understand why maybe it's so incongruously their best work.

My favorite album by AE as well. It does make me wonder how much of an impact Darrell Fitton had in defining AE's early sound. If you were to compare their first release, which is the "Cavity Job EP" you'll see no real connection to their first three albums on Warp.
I think Mr. Fitton had a pretty big hand in helping out Sean and Rob.

I sense some Beaumont Hannant in this album too, although you have absolutely right about Darrell.
I bought this two weeks after I got Amber, around jan 95 I think, and at the time I preferred Amber over it. Over the years it has grown more and more, to the point where I prefer Incunabula. I love how naïve it sounds, compared to the more cynical Confields and Drafts, and opposed to many around here, I love Lowride. 444 has one of those spine chilling melodies which I never tire of.
I'm glad that I got on the Ae train so early on, cause I don't know what I would think of this had I gotten on at the ep7 or Confield station.

this and amber and lp5 are collectively their best work in my opinion. it's an absolutely amazing piece of work, the production is incredible, especially considering the technology they were dealing with (compared to that of today) and their experience at the time.
i can't understand why so many people literally dislike and disregard it.. because it doesn't give an earache after so many seconds if listened to too loud? :/

It's awesome and has my favorite gangbangin' pair kicking it off. I like the dated sound. Some of the tracks just don't click with me, whether it be because of boring melodies or vanilla sounds, but when it's on it's on.

Yeah I remember something like "Bola teaching Autechre how to build substantial melodies".
And substantial melodies Incunabula has. You just have to drill a bit deeper to find the hidden melodies.
Incunabula: The first and last of its AE kind?

To me it is a classic. I can remember hearing it back when it came out and it just blew freshnes into what was a pretty static genre. Yeah, it sounds dated now, but summers past have this album as thier soundtrack adn for that I love this album still to this day. It;s dope. Lowride is now on my cans. Cheers.

Are you sure it was only the mastering? I haven't read one way or the other, but discogs has it listed that in the liner notes of Incunabula that Mr. Fitton is a co-producer.
