yes, you!

the two other threads made me think a bit more about the
rhetorical strengths of being in posession of a certain nick
on this mb... the personality attached to the nick and other
members regard of these personailties make a huge impact on
how any given post by certain members is
accepted/shunned/ignored/etc.

Tolstoyed, for instance may be the most respected member of
the board, and may more or less permit himself any opinion
which most likely won't be ridiculed (as opposed to elusives
political views, which are subject to being ridiculed even
if they are accepted by the person ridiculing them), but
rather discussed properly or politely if people disagree...

when i meet people in person, i'm good at quickly learning
what they're all about. this is text - it throws things way
off for me. some people i can figure out (unless everything
they say is a lie, which is possible), others i can't. i
won't make any comments on others here, though.

are you saying that it's a person's nick that determines
people's reactions to their posts? and not the rhetorical
strength of their posts?

yeah, but this is not a representation of the person, it is
an entirely new person in itself... you have certain views
of people here which you can't get around.. you enter
certain threads with more hostility because they were
created by a certain person...

Choice of avatar is linked to personality, because it is the
image that the user has decided to represent them on this
board.

well my username is quite unoriginal but in life i'm
definitely not banal... i could never think of a name that
could represent me, maybe that's cause the image i have of
myself is too blurred to be expressed in a few letters.

no, not the words or letters in the nick, but the person the
nick represents... this is not the same as an everyday
person, nor is it a real person; it is in fact less...

do you suppose that's true in every case? what if someone
intentionally uses an avatar that's completely the opposite
of their personality in real life and they are seeking to
decieve?

It's up there with people who say banal things like "I'm
totally crazy, me".

In that case, it is still an indicator of their character.
Choice of avatar must be linked to the persona projected.
Obviously, to base your judgement of somebody's character on
one thing is fatally flawed.

For instance, my avatar, in conjunction with my Xltronic
persona could lead to at least two conclusions.

1) My avatar is ironic

2) I believe that Nazis DO rule, but not the literal NAZI
party of Germany in the 1930s and 1940s, but a new facism of
Multinational Corporations, corrupt governments and control
of the masses through media, etc.

I seem to have a knack of finding interesting (to me)
threads and posting in them just as everybody else has
stopped. Maybe this is because I'm late. Maybe it's because
folks become wary when they see my nick. Maybe it's a
disagreable nick. I don't like it any more but I'm stuck
with it.

I don't believe in nominative determinism but maybe that's
cos I've got an unconvincing nick. o_0

True, I usually find a strong link between the avatar and
the content of the post. But sometimes I don't though. The
no image available avatar makes me overlook the users
post though. It's the equivalent of someone shouting in the

of course the avatar also has a part to say.. for instance
Big always seems happy and friendly with his current avatar
even though he could be insulting you or something like
that...

matvey: I don't think the people on here are real people on
here.. this is only a fraction of me, and it isn't even
based on me, it is based on YOUR conception of me, which is
more concrete and more defined than I am, since everything
I've said that you've seen and constructed "Drunken Mastah"
on is fairly well documented in the fact that it is here
until phobs empties his database... everyone on this
messageboard is a concrete person, as opposed to real life
where we may even be different persons (I think Gadamer had
the concept of the "plays" that we parttake in, but it's
been a while since I read that)...

yeah, once again, the words, meaning or letters in the nick
doesn't really matter... the nick is the "physical" (in as
broad a sense as that exists on the internet) representation
of the total sum of my posts.. even though the whole always
is more than the sum of the parts, namely the thoughts you
connect to my nick.

if it did, you'd all have to concieve me as constantly drunk
(which I may be).

actually, i didn't pass judgement on the person behind the
nick. i said what i thought about his posts.

now taking it a step further, i deduce that he must be
rather intelligent to conceive of these posts, but that's
the most i've expanded on. i still don't expect to know him
as he is in real life... not even close.

so yes, the things we say become associated with our nicks
and avatars... we become, whether we realize it or not,
prejudiced towards people (for good or ill) based on these
identifications. what else are you getting at?

Nicknames and avatars mean nothing to me. They are just a
form of expression based on thoughts and feelings at a
certain time that they were picked.

I chose Wilford Brimley because weatheredstoner and myself
got into a coversation that branched off and wound up with
brimley jokes which carried over to this avatar.

Although i am usually honest on this board, i think that
only comes across in certain posts.

Take for example that thread i made about owing money. Then
you can take that post and put it together with various
other posts of mine and come to the conclusion that:

1. I am not responcible with money
2. I am intoxicated around 80% of the time.
3. I am interested in non american girls. Perferably asian
and latino.
4. I am a slut

I am usually very up front when i am not posting pure shit.
Those shit posts occur under intoxocation.

that's basically true...

but what is being said now is that even if someone uses a
seemingly-arbitrary avatar, it must be at least a small
reflection of that person's personality. perhaps only on a
subconcious level. what the wilford brimley-afterthought
avatar says to me is that here's something you think is
funny and decided to express in an avatar, perpetuating the
joke. it's likely that that's a small glimpse into who you
are.

and the other thing you said... people will all draw their
own conclusions about virginpusher based on what he says,
and that's unavoidable. those conclusions will most likely
be as different and varied as the people reading them. but
we will all associate what we've taken from your posts with
